Thank you all you mom's who have responded this is great..talking to you ladies has lessened my anxiety tremendously....Proudmom how is your daughter doing in language school? 27 hrs away is where? She is at Monterey isn't she. We live 50 miles north of Seattle, so pretty close, at least the west coast...He really misses his sister and brother and wants them to come to graduation. They are 2 years older at 27yrs and 2 yrs younger at 23 yrs. He is 25yrs. He will even pay their way...:)

Congrats to you jangles and thank you to your son!

While my daughter was at basic she called and we talked for 1 hour and 15 minutes the first time while she was getting security clearance information.  I was overjoyed.  She thought it was pretty easy too going thru basic.

When your son passes basic right before graduation, don't be surprised when you get an hour + long phone call cause they've made it and all that's left is graduation.

You should be so proud of your son!  We got to see our daughter about 4 hours after graduation cause she was whisked off to language school.  I really miss her - we are about 27 hours away.  I'm really hoping to go to her CTI graduation next year - and time will tell!

Good luck to your son!!

Congrats, jangles.  I heard from my guy four times while in BC.  So be prepared for more calls.  Things have changed since the days my hubby was in BC down in Orlando.  They were only allowed a phone call in an emergency.

I don't think he's pulling your leg.  My guy thought it was a breeze, too.  He said some people make it harder on themselves than it should be.  I'm sure you're happy to hear he's doing well and not letting the BC stuff "get" to him.  I know that eased my mind, for sure.

What a nice bonus having him come home in between BC and school.  We saw our guy for about 8 hours total between graduation and when he boarded the plane.  I think that goodbye hit me harder than him leaving for BC.  Although my husband, how has had to pick up the pieces of me each time our son leaves, might disagree.

He called needing to have additional information for security clearance...So excited for him. He said basic is a breeze...:) is this my son trying to shine on his mom???

Hi Kanesmom, welcome to the group. You are doing the best thing right now which is to ask questions early and hopefully get answers that will make this journey a bit easier for you and your sailor. The one great thing that I learned by accident was that at the airport in chicago the sailors are authorized to check 3 bags instead of two. I had just happened to bring with me a small black (must be black) duffel with some of my son's clothes and things. When he checked his bags he added the duffel. When they get to DLI they have to go through 3 phases in the first and I think second phase they can only wear their uniform on post and then in phase 3 they are allowed to wear their civilian clothes. My sailor wore his immeidately and then went with the other sailors to the stores when they all went in uniform to the stores to buy clothes. My sailor was pretty happy he didn't have to do that.

You will also get great tips from the main Basic training forum plus eventually when your sailor starts he will get his grad day and a specific forum will be created for his specific group. Its a great way to commiserate :-)

Good luck to your sailor and enjoy the holidays.

Hi Kanesmom! I'm sure your son will do fine at Basic, just remind him the first few days he will be EXHAUSTED but after that it gets a bit better. After basic, he will get his phone, laptop, iPod, iPad or such when you give it to him at the airport. He can take them with him to CTI school. You might have him pack a flat-rate box ot two of his civilian clothes and a jacket to mail him when he gives you the ok from school. Hope this helps a little.

Hi everyone, although I've been reading all of the comments for the last few months this is my first post. My son leaves for basic in mid December and I'm starting to have a few questions. He has already taken his test and we know that he will be attending CTI (if all goes well during basic). We are planning on celebrating Christmas early this year - before he leaves. I know that he can't take anything with him to basic, but can he take anything with him when he gets to school? I understand that their time is packed pretty full while they are there, so I'd like to get gifts that will help him out while in school.

Also, just wanted to say thanks to everyone on here, I have learned more from all of you ladies that I have from anyone else so far :)

my son is in his last day of SERE school and I can't stop thinking about him. I miss him. It's nicknamed the 'Torture School' and I'm hoping it's not  too bad. He met 2 young men who had just returned and they lost 10lbs and 14lbs each during the 2nd  week. I begged him to beef up prior to going but he was in Pensacola at the aircrew candidate school  which was a big physical demand and I guess he really couldn't pack on the pounds during all that training.  Waiting anxiously for his phone call tomorrow!!

Well our son's graduation from CTI Monterrey is almost here! We will be out there for a week. Any ideas, advice etc ) of the Monterrey  area (where to eat, shop, wine tastings) would be hugely appreciated!  Thanks!

My son took it 2 weeks ago. Ugh!!!!! It was the longest 4 days of our lives. We were his cheerleaders. Telling him no matter what we were coming for a visit and bring blueberry. Pop tarts. The rest really didn't matter. As a parent it was tough he had been there for 16 months and was ready for a vacation. The day the scores came out there was a problem with the computer. We did find out til 5:30 pm our time. Very long day, but he passed. Last Thursday we watched him and his classmate graduate. Everyone that goes through that school should be proud it's tough. Best wishes to ur husband. And u.
