Hi Noni. We flew into San Francisco and rented a car. I think it would be much better to fly into either San Cruz or Monterey. The rush hour traffic was a nightmare and the security at the airport took over an hour. Our son had a car so we didn't need a car. Besides that everything in Monterey is in walking distance. If you want to explore the area like Carmel. 17 Mile Drive, or Big Sur then you will need a car. The airports also have shuttles at reasonable rates. Flying to SF the tickets were cheaper, but after paying for the rental car we didn;t need we probably would have been better off paying a little more to get into the local airports. Message me if you need any additional info.
Dee, I agree. I set fare alerts on both Expedia and Travelocity and watched over the months so I would know a good fare when I saw it. We never paid more than $238 for any trip from Minneapolis to Monterey. You just have to be ready to jump on a fare when you see one you like because in an hour it might have changed or sold out.
I fare-watched Monterey, San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland, but Monterey always ended up the least expensive for us.
One time my sailor made reservations at the airport in Monterey rather than booking online. On travel day, there was no room, so the agent booked a taxi to drive him and three other sailors to San Francisco and gave them each a $400 travel voucher for their "trouble!"
We have had really good experiences with the tiny, 3-gate-big Monterey airport. The planes are small so they take 5 minutes to board, the car rental return is steps from the gate. Anybody with a car is willing to make the 5 minute run to the airport to drop off a traveler, so there are no taxis or shuttles to schedule. Once my sailor had to change his flight day because someone assigned him a watch or some similar duty, so he went to the airport and they didn't charge him any fee because they called it "change of orders." We really like the Monterey airport.
Ok Moms - particularly IndyMom, since you were just there - Where's the best airport to fly into to visit Monterey? They have a smaller airport but so far I've only found certain times that flights go in there. SanFrancisco? SanJose? Oakland? Then did you rent a car & drive to Monterey? We'd like to visit but need to narrow things down a bit before looking into airfare. Thanks for the help!
Just got back from visiting my son in Monterey. He has made some good friends and starts classes on Thrusday. If you can afford a trip it is well worth it.
It's official! Got his scores on his test and he did amazing. My boy is a CT-I :-) Phew, was that a stressful ride!!
This will be my first trip out to see him since he got there 14 months ago. He just took the last of his 3 tests today (DLPT???). I know he did fine, but he has been on edge and won't talk to me until he gets his result. He said after the first test (speaking) that he didn't want me to ask about it and he doesn't want to talk about it. Poor guy. Such pressure. And he's a perfectionist so I know he is being hard on himself.
