I found greeting cards in my son's language at greetingcarduniverse.com.  Also holiday cards for the specific countries.

I don't get many chances to get on here and tonight I was reading through all the comments and thought I'd throw my 2 cents worth in...when my sailor was at DLI something fun and educational i did for her was search amazon for books in her language and sent them to her in the care packages i sent. Some were beginners language books designed for kids but she thought they were fun and helpful in the early months at dli...then later i sent crossword puzzle books in that language and poetry books and even some cookbooks. Just a little suggestion.
And for anyone wondering about going to DLI for graduation, i highly recommend it. Its a beautiful area...we joked when i visited her in may of this year that we both wished she was still out in California...there's quite a difference between DLI and FG...

What can you tell me about the DLAB? What is the best way to study?

Thanks!

I will be more active in this once my son is at A School. Still in bootcamp. He just started week one last Friday. He has a ways to go.

We got a hotel near the air port the night before ours left, so we could get up at 5:30 a.m. and meet him at the air port.  You are able to get a gate pass and go through security and wait with your sailor.  Even though ours arrived on the 5/30 a.m. but, his flight was not until around 2 p.m. that afternoon.  So we were able to spend most of the day with him.

Buses run from midnight to 0530. My SR's flight was at 0630, so her bus left at 0330

JHubby - but they're still on a bus off to the airport at 12 am?

My SR left Great Lakes around 0500 the morning after PiR. It all depends on when flights are available, but flights to Monterey are on a pretty regular schedule.

Curious if CTIs are usually in the Grad & Go category? Anyone know?

Many families are sad about how few people can attend the PIR ceremony at Great Lakes.  It is an incredible thing to attend.  But keep in mind that out of all the ratings, graduation from DLI for your CTI is just as rewarding if not more so so keep your chins up and positive.  Our eldest daughter graduated from Great Lakes about 10 years ago and it was so moving but we had barely five full hours with her.  Her rating graduation ceremony was at Great Lakes also and pretty ho-hum.  HOWEVER- at DLI- it's amazing.   It's at one of the most beautiful military institutions in the country, a great mix of all the branches, and you have a TON more time together- and can overnight with family with an approved chit.  So if seats are limited and the budget is tight, attend his/her DLI graduation if you only had a choice of one vs. the other if someone had to be bumped.   Just wanted to give some positive support to those (like us) that have to sadly leave out some key family when we go to Great Lakes.  The cup is always half full (plus the seafood and wines are spectacular there in Monterey- right on the Pacific!!!).  Gotta love the Navy and their locations- I feel so sorry for Air Force and Army people stationed in desolate, windblown places.  Sailors do have more fun! LOL!
