Susan, thanks and ask away. My son has been in for 3 years now but as CTI he has 6 yr commitment with 2 yr reserves afterwards. With his position now he apparently has to alternate his time evenly between deployment & being home. I had no idea until he just told me the other day. I know most people in the military - when they deploy they might go all over the world & see many different places. With our CTI's I don't think they get that opportunity? They are pretty much gonna go to their 1 geographic area and that's it. Considering my son will only be sent back to the 'armpit of the world' ( someone else's words ), I feel kinda bad for him. But I'm sure he knew what he was getting himself into so it's okay. Congrats on your upcoming PIR! My son ate a lot of peanut butter in boot camp. Maybe that's what made your son gain weight. He would joke & say that ate peanut butter 3 meals a day. :-)

@KC's mom: I feel for your concerns over KC. maybe I also. See myself in you a bit! have conditions improved for KC? what do you mean he has gotten his orders to go back? how much longer is he in for? I just sent you a friendship request, and I hope you will answer it! I have a couple more questions for you. Anyway, you and KC are in my prayers. I think he is going to be OK.

Bunker- that's a great idea! I'm on the East Coast though. I'll do a search online for a group near me. Hope I find one. I could really use a get together with other navy moms. My son did my message & called today ( video chat ). He was telling me about the violence in the country he's in. Just horrible. He's only seen remnants of protests like items burning out that were lit on fire with little bombs or cocktails. They of course have a buddy system & other safety measures to avoid violence or the people that don't want Americans there. The good news is- he has a proposed date to come home. The bad news is - he was also given a proposed date to return. Ugh!!!!!!!

KC's mom, your mind is going thru some worst case scenario. It's OK. It's just your emotions adjusting. Let it out. Give it a good cry. You are strong. Adjusting gets easier but of course, the 1% of the time when you are going out of your mind will still be there. No, don't count on friends w/o kids in the military to understand, especially the sudden breakdown (most of the time very short but very unpredictable). Look for a Blue Star group in your local area. They get together once a month to put together packages to send out (not just Navy - for all branches).  I am very involved with our local N4M group - San Francisco Bay Area Navy Families -  we have meet and greets thru out the year - sometimes it's very informal with 3 to 6 people, sometimes it's a big thing with over 25 people at a big dinner. The meet and greets are spread out over a large regional area - some in Santa Rosa, some in Walnut Creek, some in San Jose. If you are a Northern Calif person, join us. Lots of local support. Here is a photo from a meet and greet we had a while back.

Here is another one a group got together for lunch, then watch a parade on Veteran's day.

Thank you so much! Just needed to hear from navy moms. I don't think my friends understand. It reminds me of the time I had a annual cancer screening scan show an abnormality in the area of my previous cancer. After getting the call from my Dr I was crying & upset. My husband & all my friends only had 1 thing to say to me " oh don't worry, I'm sure it's nothing ". But they've never had cancer? So how could they understand how it feels to be told that kind of news? It frustrated me so much & just pissed me off really, that they couldn't just acknowledge my feelings. And just be present rather than offer pacifying remarks. That is how I felt again this week. If someone I know could just say ' gosh, it must be hard for you.' So, thanks for providing a place for my venting & not judging ( I hope ).

I am praying for you, KCs mom, and all who have children who serve our country.  Those of us who have not experienced what you are going through cannot fully understand until it happens to us, but hopefully, we can all get through this together.  God is bigger than anything we will ever face.

Looks like it did not come through - definition: SPOOK: A species of carefully selected, highly trained members of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps who do things they can never talk about for people they do not know with little recognition from those they have served.  Take solace in knowing that you are a Navy Mom, with a child who has chosen to serve and pay no attention to those that do not understand,  you will never be able to make them understand. Bless you and your sailor!

I feel for you KC's mom -  our children (adults) have chosen a life of service - one in which we cannot openly share their unselfish sacrifices, and it is trying at times.  I, too, do not have friends or family whose child is in the military. I find solace with fellow Navy Moms on FaceBook and here, those that truly understand.  There is a description of our children: 564617_10151859594612785_429379374_n%5B1%5D.jpg

hopefully this comes through
