OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

CTN Overmanned
Sorry I posted this earlier but forgot to add a title:
My daughter called from boot camp today and unfortunately we missed her call. She called to say CTN is overmanned and she was told she needs to reclassifiy and was calling to ask for our input. This is heart breaking for her I know after being in DEP since last September with CTN as her rating of choice. What's going on with this rating? I'm a retired CTNC and it's very difficult for me to encourage others to enlist when potential sailors are treated this way....with two weeks left to graduate??

This is frustrating. When our son took this rating a couple years ago, it was supposedly severely undermanned. Good chance for rapid promotion. By the time he finished A school, the situation had changed. I don't know how the Navy's forecasting of these ratings can be so off. I'm sure she will find a rating that suits her well.

Her best chance might be to go for another CT rate or IT since they are all at Corry, then maybe she could still cross rate into CTN. I agree, it's awful they couldn't tell her that before she took the oath. Really poor planning.
btw, your original post showed up as a comment. I saw it, just didn't know how to answer until I talked to my son today.

That is just terrible. And sad for the rest of our kids that are expecting to be CTN's. I hope your daughter finds something that is comparable or at least easy for her to cross rate into CTN at a later time. Good Luck to her.. I guess I should be expecting to hear from my son as well.

That's awful.Was she guaranteed her job in her contract? My Depper was, but I'm not sure if that would make a difference in this case. I just can't see how they could take that away from her. Very disappointing. JoshB's mom, let us know how it goes. I wish the best for all of those currently in boot camp hoping to be a CTN.

Yes, she was guanteed CTN back in Feb of this year. She's been in DEP since last Sept. From what I know, the Navy offered her any job she wanted but when your heart is set on something it's difficult to choose another job at that moment and she had no idea what she should pick. My biggest complaint is why wait two weeks before graduation? Her orders were cut 12 Sept. It might be because of the new fiscal year staring in Oct. but still this is such poor planning.

I thought my Depper was guaranteed his CTN rate but maybe those words don't mean anything. I haven't gotten a call in awhile and nothing about in any letters. I will keep everyone up to date with info as it comes in.

My son is an IT and he has said for quite awhile now that it is very understaffed and there is a lot of room for advancement, plus good opportunity for work after Navy careers. Not sure how easy it would be to cross rate to CTN but then again not sure if she would want to if it is over staffed and not much room for advancement. Good luck to your daughter, keep us posted.

Thanks for the advice. I was really hoping she would pick IT but she chose CTT. I'm hoping she calls today and if she wants IT, can change her job....again. If she sticks with CTT, I know she'll make the most of it.

Thanks for all your replies and well wishes for my daughter! From what I know after talking to RTC PSD, she chose CTT as well as most if not all the other prior-CTNs in her division. The Chief said that 28 CTN seats were cut by a directive in Millington. I also called the CTN detailer on Friday and he hasn't heard anything about this and after looking up my daughter's SSN, she still had orders to JCAC (CTN) school for October but this will probably change. I hope my daughter gets to phone home today, my husband and I feel so guilty for not being home and taking her call last week.

I'm so sorry to hear this! I hope your daughter will be just as happy with the new rating. My son is in boot camp and was supposedly guaranteed CTN school. It is the reason why he joined the Navy and he will be crushed if he is cut. Please keep us informed of anything else you hear.

I'm finding this all a bit disconcerting - my daughter, also was promised CTN - in boot camp now - and this conversation leads me to believe that she may have to do something else... we haven't heard from her yet so I really don't know what is going on. Is this something fairly normal and, do they get any "say" in a different career/rating?

No this isn't normal and yes, she can pick any rating that has an opening if she qualifies for it. If you talk to her in time, tell her to keep CTN until she gets to P-Cola. RTC will tell her that there will be limited openings if she waits until she gets to Corry (P'Cola) but this isn't true. She can pick something at Corry as well at RTC if she needs to change her rating. There's a chance she'll keep her CTN rating if she already has orders written while in bootcamp. I wish my daughter kept hers instead of being influenced to switch to CTT. If your daughter does need to change ratings, IT is a good rating to get into because it's not overmanned right now and it's close to what she'll do as a CTN.
