My son is at Correy station waiting for his A school to begin. Does anyone know of any books he could get to familiarize himself with any course material?. Any books that encompass programming, mathematics, hardware would be helpful. Obviously there is material they cover that is "secret", but any basice non secret covered material/coursework books would help. Thanks

Larry,
Frankly the couse material is given at "A" school. There is no way I would pollute his mind by having him read books now. My feelings is you will actually harm him because he will get something in his head that is wrong, then challenge the instructor with this false information. Rather than spend hours and hours to retrain his thinking, they would probably just drop him. It's much easier to teach a dog, than it is to retrain a dog. Just my thoughts...
With that said, and if you still desire to "help" him, then do a seach on google for materials that all E4 CTN's will need to know which is in the CTN bib (CTN Bibliography). I went to the Navy offical website, (you must have a valid military ID to get in), and they have a link there but it is broken. You may also want to read this thread:

I agree Craig, he might be better off just letting the instructors teach him what he needs to know. But, Larry, if your son is good at learning from books I would start with computer networking, maybe a Network+ book. That is what I gave my daughter. I figured it would give her a basic foundation to start with since she is starting at zero.
Hi Navy Mom,
Thank you for your reply. My son is also starting at zero. I agree with the Network + book. I will not inundate him with "books and books", he has enough to worry about. But as I mentioned to Craig on the other post, I want him to stay in "study shape". Reading for an hour or say each day would be sufficient and not overwhelming.
Thank you again. I appreciate your input.
Did your daughter start school? If so Best Wishes for success.

Larry
Thanks for your reply Craig. I agree with the retraining theory. My simple purpose is to get him in the mindset about code and programming etc.. He doesn't have much experience in this field. He does have "learning smarts" and patience and is task oriented. I just don't want him to get into bad habits and laziness while he is waiting to class up. I have heard this could be anywhere from 1 month to a few.
I did find a "Elementary Computer Mathematics" Hypertext online By a Prof. Koehler from Iowa University. I read through it and it appears to be just that, elementary. It teaches about Binary and Hexadecimal conversions and Set theory. I don't think this will pollute his mind as it seems to be pretty fundamental.
As I said I just want him to read a little every day to stay in "study shape", and be familiar with certain terms.
I sincerely appreciate your help. If you come up with any other suggestions, I am open minded.
Thank you
Larry
