Hello everyone! This is my first post here on Navy4Moms. Great site! My boy leaves Aug 21 for bootcamp. I have some questions about this "security clearance".
We are wondering WHEN we (the family) may be approached and questioned. Will there be any warning or will they just suddenly appear at our doorstep?? Who all are they going to question and will this be soon...like BEFORE bootcamp or is this something that will take place afterwards?? We just have no idea what to expect.
Appreciate any guidance here and sorry if this has been discussed before.

The person who interviewed us regarding my son did call before he came over to the house, but we did not have much notice. He asked us for names of friends, neighbors, and requested contact names at my son's high school. I gave him the school counselor's name and a couple of teacher names.I later learned that he asked the church references for names of OTHER people he could contact - so he went beyond just the names we provided. He spoke to the youth minister at our church. I cannot recall the exact timing; however, I believe he interviewed us just prior to my son going to boot camp. Then when he was at boot camp, he was required to provide names, addresses, and phone numbers, which was frustrating for him since he did not have his computer or phone. He called me from GL and I helped him locate them. I even spoke to a lady in the GL administrative office at one point. The interview was fine - we had absolutely nothing to hide. The interviewer was very friendly and jovial at first, then after we were relaxed, he began to ask the more serious questions and assumed a tougher, more serious attitude. Everything worked out fine though. I have not received any negative results or information about my son based on those inquiries.
Thanks harpist mom! We are kind of nervous about this whole thing. You don't want your house to be a mess when they come over...etc. ha. Do they go to your neighbors houses and other family members homes? If so, I may need to give them a little warning so they wont be totally freaked out. Some of our neighbors don't even know that he is going into the Navy.
I doubt it will happen before bootcamp. And, yes, they will just show up. In our case, I was working in the garden and noticed a strange man in a "government type vehicle (regularly plated)" knock on our neighbor's door. Ours neighbors have a lake house and move out to it in the summer and were not home. The man then went to the house on the other side of ours which was vacant. I actually approached him as I suspected he was doing the clearance. I was right. He then asked me when would be a convenient time to meet with me.
The big questions seemed to be more behavioral oriented. Very interested in friendships, alcohol and drug use, gambling, and any credit issues.
It is really nothing to get all worked up about.
Good luck,
I would recommend that you let your neighbors know about the possibility of being interviewed. He did speak to at least one neighbor on the phone. As he was leaving the house, he told me it would not be necessary to speak to her, and then he called her later! To my knowledge, he mainly spoke to the references on the phone, not in person, with the exception of a church friend who is a school nurse: he went to her school and conducted the interview there!
After thinking about it, I believe the person did interview us just after my son left for boot camp. The sequence of events was quite close together (boot camp and interview). He did not seem that interested in talking to family members other than the parents - he was seeking people outside the family, more likely to give an impartial opinion, I suppose.
I agree with northchannel that the questions were related to drug and alcohol use, whether he would illegally hack into a computer system, character qualities, if he had ever been arrested, and if there was anything we were aware of that would cause him to be ill-suited for a job in cryptology. Of course most of the above questions we asked at the end of our interview, per my previous post. The guy actually made small talk at the very beginning. He stayed about an hour, as I recall.
hey! my son just finished bootcamp on july 13th and has been in pensacola for 2 weeks and we still haven't had anyone call or come by our house.not sure when this will happen for us either.
This question made me laugh. I have never been approached by anyone regarding my sons security. He had so many people on his list that they didn't need to talk to me or his father. They did talk to all his friends and my parents...also teachers at his school. And, they didn't ask until he was at the end of Boot camp and through A school. And, my son is a CTR and has been in since 2009
Well I appreciate the comments. Looks like there's no way to actually know when these guys are going to show up! So I will have to have a clean house and make up on at ALL TIMES! lol
my son is in BC we have not been interviewed yet and want to know if we can give them the names of neighbors to speak to or do they just walk up and knock on neighbors doors I have one neighbor who is crazy and we do not speak I would not want them speaking to her since we do not get along. I love the other neighbors there are some that dont speak to anyone and would not even know him. should I start putting together a list of names and contacts. he is only 18 so he does not have an extensive work back round they can go to his school and speak to them.
Hi..my son is in BC right now. His job classification is CTR and his PIR date is 10/19/12. We have not been interviewed by anyone yet and thats interesting about the facebook account because my son was ALLOWED on facebook to communicate with me and his friends pertaining to security questions.
Well the Navy was out doing interviews in our neighborhood yesterday. He talked to one of my neighbors and my mother (who both live next door) but did not come and talk to me. Which is fine. He spoke to teachers at the high school, my boyfriend, and several of my son's friends and college roommates. I hear he will be back tomorrow speaking with the grandparents on the other side of the family but was more interested in his friends and acquaintances.
My son graduates next Friday...so I'm posting this mostly for information to future parents (etc) of recruites so they will know what to expect.
