Also we contacted the ombudsman connected with his duty station. They reached out to us immediately. Gave us his email address and the mailing address for his ship. Also told us about a closed group Facebook page for his ship. I submitted my name through the ombudsman and they contacted ship command and I was approved once they verified my son was on the ship. Amazing to follow the ship and they post pictures. Saw my son in one!

Thanks for all the answers re their rates! My son bought a prepaid international cell phone at the NEX. He buys a new sims card in the ports he visits and that way he can call us while he is in port. He uses his ship email while he is on the ship. So nice to have contact. We also suspended his iPhone while he is deployed. Verizon waives charges for deployed military and they told me you could suspend up to 18 months!

Kelly - You can look here too:

http://www.navyformoms.com/group/ctratemoms/forum/topics/ct-info-ev...

cinder - Chair Force, now that is awesome.

sunshine - The Air Force does pay their airmen a dislocation allowance since the Corry facilities doesn't meet their standards.  I don't think they will move since it a joint facility.  I think it would be nearly impossible in todays "save money" era.

Lastly, if there is ever an family emergency and you don't know your sailors location or information, all you do is call the Red Cross.  The Red Cross is awesome.  When my father died, I heard from family members 1st, but the Red Cross was almost as quick since my family contacted them at the hospital.  They set up everything to get me home for the viewing and burial. It's one thing the military has got perfect.  It works really well.
