Hi Lorene -

Thank you so much for the information - It is very helpful, we are from Ohio so we may be earning some frequent flyer miles :-) Congratulations to your son, that is fantastic!

Honestly I don't know how she will be, when he was in college he would put off doing assignments because she was there. He still did very well, but I don't think this is going to be like college :-)

Thank you again for responding - Have a wonderful day!

Good morning Divided_Duo!  My son is 23 and currently at DLI Monterey, graduating in Oct for Arabic. We live 1.5 hrs away and it has been incredible to be able to see him as often as he'd like to come. Last year he was under lockdown (Covid) and was unable to see us. Now he could come home any weekend he isn't on duty, but the visits are about once a month now, as he's established friends and interests there.

I would say yes, it is incredible difficult for at least the first 6 months. And my son had to do it via Zoom - 6 hrs a day of instruction, watching it on a laptop. It was awful. They're back in person now, and he's doing well, but they are literally drinking out of a fire hose. There is 6 hours of instruction and 2-3 hours of homework a night, and I don't know if a wife would be helpful/hurtful; I suppose it depends on the wife! I don't know details of if wives are allowed, etc. They are grouped in rooms by language and by branch of service. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Hello...My son is graduating bootcamp at the end of this month then heading out to DLI Monterey - he was assigned Chinese but wanted Russian :-)

Questions - from everything I read Boot Camp graduations are still cancelled and available online, is this still correct?

With the DLI being very difficult, (again from everything I've read) is there a good time to visit him? Are we even allowed to visit?

I'm so new to this military life that my head is often spinning with all the information so I apologize for my ignorance. He is 20 YO and got engaged before he left for bootcamp. They've been dating for 3 years and now would like to rush getting married so she can go out to Monterey with him. His father and I think he needs to get out there first, wait about 6 months to see how everything is going then see what happens. Are we wrong for thinking this? I just think he's rushing life and needs to concentrate on himself and school for the next 2 years.

Thank you for any advice!!! <3

Oops, posted before I was finished. My daughter has been in the Navy as a CTI for 10 years. Her current language is Spanish, but she will be going back to DLI Monterey in April to learn Chinese and will be stationed in Hawaii after that. I'm so proud of her and I'm looking forward to visiting Monterey again.

Hello everyone! I've been using Navy4Moms for 10 years, but never joined a group. I joined this one because of my daughter who is a CTI.

Arabic!  If it's Korean, I believe he may end up in Hawaii, which will be fabulous for visits :-)

Hi Lorene,
He wasn’t 100% sure but he thinks he will be learning Korean. What language is your son studying?
Comment by Lorene on January 2, 2021 at 1:13pm

Welcome Michele! My son has been in Monterey 9 months now. It's very beautiful down there, although classes have all been online except for a scant two week period. Does he know what language yet?

Hi everyone! My son is in boot camp and his PIR is the end of January. He’s going to be CTI in Monterey.

Hi, my son is in boot camp and will be a CTM.  I know there are only a few in the fleet...any CTM moms on here?  Thank you!
