I'm actually staying at the Holiday Inn Resort on the beach. That museum sounds like a must see.  Definitely will do that.

A bunch of new sailors are actually taking a PO indoc class tomorrow morning. I guess there's a class going on and they've been told to just take it and get it out of the way.  Weird thing is, I've taught that class recently and I still have all the materials/power points on my computer.  It's very hard to keep my mouth zipped when my kid brings up Navy stuff that I can help her with.  For some reason she doesn't want to hear it from me.  But then again, I get to say, "I told you so" alot :)

p.s. Forgot to add....  the thong  will do wonders for his morale, but really sucks for his morals...

erica - Today's Navy is doing a lot of things that suck.  Your husband is getting caught with a country that is in economic turmoil.  CTR is an awesome job that will allow him to get the SBI security clearance that will benefit him greatly once he gets ready to retire.  So, he really needs to get the basics of CTR and come up to speed quickly.

I know you're new to this group, and these ladies know that I speak the truth and give advise without sugarcoating stuff.  So, I'm going to put this out there so you can understand the sailors point of view....

So secondly, lets face it, the writing is on the wall.  He is just beginning CTR and has almost no chance of making Chief in the CTR rating.  He might know the Navy really well, but he doesn't know the rating, which will hurt him.  The E4's and E5's sailors under him need to have someone that knows the rating really well so he can fight for them when some officer starts trying to make them do useless stuff.  So your husband really needs to come up to speed really, really quick.  He is really going to have a hard time with these E4's and E5's knowing more than him but just remember, these sailors have been in the rating since day one they know it.  As hard as it is, he will need to trust their knowledge.  I know I would have a hard time with that, but having seen this before with other sailor doing this, I know it.  So, kind of discuss this part with him so he's not totally off guard when it happens.  He needs to start thinking about it and have a game plan in place.

Lastly, I was in the era of overmanning in 1996.  It was called Temporary Early Retirement Authority (TERA).  The Navy originally offered lump sum payouts to senior sailors to get out.  The amount was $60K which is nothing.  Then they offered full monthly retirement less 1% per year you get out early since you start getting paid earlier (mine was 2% since I got out with 18 years).  When you figure the amount you get in 2 years ($30K), minus the $75 per month, then the breakeven point for me was age 57.  After age 57 then I finally begin losing $75 per month.  Who cares?  $75 at age 57 means nothing.  Frankly it means nothing now, nor 15 years ago when I retired.

So, I'm just telling you this because I know the Navy will do this program again.  It has already has been passed by Congress.  The Navy just hasn't began it yet.  So start figuring the numbers now and get a full understanding on how well this program works for the sailor.  It's awesome!  But people are scared because they never ran the number.

Since I run my own Navy website I have to stay fully informed about all Navy things.  This just came out today about TERA.

Sorry this post was soooo long, but I love saving sailors.  So don't kill the messenger... Just trying to give you non sugarcoated advise....

Cool?

Yes, my son just classed up this past week and he said his CTN class is almost entirely fleet returnees so he should have lots of company!

Welcome Erica my son is waiting for his c school CTT. Lots of fleet returnees, so your husband won't be the only one.
Comment by navymom3 on January 20, 2012 at 9:21pm

Erica I am sure he will go great in school. My CTM son had a fleet returnee in is class. He made great friends with him and they both ended up going to Japan together. My other son who is AT2 said if he has to go into another field he wants a CT field also.

Comment by navymom3 on January 20, 2012 at 9:01pm

Welcome Erica= This is a great group. If you have any questions just ask. Someone is bound to know the answer. The CT field is a great field to get into. What does your husband do now? I have 2 son's in the navy 1 is an AT2 the other one is CTM.

Welcome erica80!  My son just started A School for CTN and he's felt like the old guy at (almost) 25 amongst lots of much younger sailors.
