My son started the whole recruitment process while he was away at school. He is home now but he loves his recruiter so we are working with a long distance relationship. He goes to local DEP meetings once a month and he also is working with a local trainer for PSTs so that is all good. He has weekly calls with his Chief just to check in. My question is, since he is doing MEPS at his original location (quite a ways from home) when will he have to leave to ship out? His contract says Oct 27. Is that the date he needs to be at MEPS or is that the date he is due at Great Lakes? I hate to contact his recruiter (even though he is extremely nice and helpful) because my son at 23 does not want Mom running interference. While this is all well and good, someone still needs to think far enough ahead to get the flights coordinated! :)

My2kidz - Congratulations and welcome to the roller coaster ride that is the Navy!! As far as my knowledge the date on his contract is the date that he reports to MEPS, which is what the Navy considers his first day of with them even though he isn't actually at Great Lakes yet. That will be the date that he swears in and then they will take him to the airport, meet up with other recruits and then they will fly out to Great Lakes. Of course if it were me I'd double check that with his recruiter anyway - I have a son who was never all that interested in the small details. He's gotten much better about it now that he has had to take care of all the small details himself since he went in 2 years ago. :) Good Luck!!
