monkeymind welcome. My son is in the wildcats squadron and is also deployed at the moment. First thing my son found out when he got there is that they need a car. Its a hike from the barracks to the hangar.
See, this site is so wonderful...ask and you shall receive. I will have him check his orders when he gets home (he can't stand a minute of down time while he's on leave, and he missed his car).
As for the name, well I certainly feel "unfocused" lately. Having my son home is wonderful but also a bit of a challenge. I'm sure you've all struggled with sharing your time and gently encouraging them to visit the grandparents or call so-and-so.
One thing the Navy did not change about him- he had his room trashed in 2 seconds. He said he is only meticulous when he has to be : )
His squadron will be deployed next month. He has to complete C school and then will be flown out to the ship. He's pretty excited. Any Blue Blasters out there? I met one mom already and she has educated me quite a bit.
Monkeymind (love the name) If he's reporting to Oceana, I would think someone from the base would pick him up at the airport.....that's what they did for my son when he went there.....I'd have him check this out. And it's about 20 minutes to a half hour from Norfolk to Oceana, with all the traffic................
My son is home on leave now and will be leaving Sunday to report to Oceana for C school. He booked his flight into Norfolk. How far is it to Virginia Beach and what is the best way for him to get there? He has quite a bit to lug around and is very new to all of this. Thanks, any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks Lala Ribbon Quenn. He's a little bummed about it but that's the military life. He will hopefully have some friends to share the day with. He will be getting a 14 day leave in December but he probably won't be home on Christmas day. If not we will celebrate early. I'm thankful for whatever we can get. It's good to hear from a fellow North Carolinian.
susanm- I am so sorry he won't be home for Thanksgiving. My daughter (AO with Ragin' Bulls) and her husband IT at Little Creek do get to come home for Thanksgiving and they are bringing at least 2 extra Sailors with them who can't make it home for Thanksgiving. One is from CA and one from WA. We are looking forward to having them here with us in NC :-)
I got our son a electric fry pan last year, they can use it in the barracks.......he used it several times when he was living on base!
I'm thinking maybe a toaster oven too. I think he said they have a microwave and refrigerator in the room. I already got him a coffee maker. He has a tv and dvd player too. Any other ideas?
Besides the NEX outside the gate of Oceana, there is the world's largest NEX in Norfolk, right off the base where the ships are ported.......have been in both and both are nice but the one in Norfolk is huge and lots of selection
Thanks ladies. Gift card it is. I remember last Christmas I got him one and when he opened it he said how did you get this(smiling) I said "I'm good, what can I say" haha
