My mother had Alzheimers and was in the same type of locked unit.  It was very nice and comfortable.  They provided all kinds of activities for the residents. They even had a salon and had cosmetology students that came in twice a week to do hair and nails. It was a great thing when we could no longer care for her at home. She passed away 6 years ago. It wasn't until her last few months that she didn't know the family or where she was. It is a difficult disease to deal with, for both the patient and their loved ones. My thoughts and prayers will be with you  and your family as you deal with this situation. I encourage you to find an Alzheimers support group. It helps to know that there are a lot of people out there who are going through the same thing. You will feel better if you can share with them. Best of luck to you!

Tina-Alzheimers units are locked -only those with the code, family and staff, can open the doors.  They do that because the patients tend to wander when they don't remember where they are.  They try to leave and go 'home'.  You may have heard reports of missing elderly on the news.  That is what they try to prevent with these units.  The place he is in is really very nice.  He seems to have settled in very well.  Only a few times has he asked to go 'home'.  We aren't even sure he knows where that was, just that he was someplace different from where he is now. They have activities all day long.  They play movies for them and games and have a 'today is and what is going on in the world' time each morning.

Part of the problem with  Alzheimers is that most people that get it are healthy as can be other then they can't remember who they are, or how to get dressed or wash themselves or feed themselves etc.  This is the case with my Dad, so he may live for along time in this unit.  But at least he will be safe.

It is kind of like your kid going to Bootcamp.  Someone is there to get them up, make them eat 3 meals, take a shower, teach them something and put them to bed at night!!  No worries for the Mom/Daughter!!

That is sad. good luck to you m'smom. My mom is 88 and is still smoking and drinking. Her mind is holding up better than her body.

Comment by Valtameri on October 21, 2011 at 4:38pm

Hi everyone!

M'smom -- Sorry to hear about your Dad. How is he adjusting to his new environment?

Comment by m'smom on October 19, 2011 at 9:17am

Very quiet out here lately!  Hope all of you are just busy with life.

Been away moving Dad to a secure (locked) memory unit due to his alzhiemers (sp).  The move went better then we could have hoped.  We have his apartment all cleaned out and moved into my garage!  I hope the purchase of a townhouse goes thru soon for my son & DIL!!  I was hoping to get a car in the garage this winter!!

Have a great day ladies!

m'smom I hope some day when I have a DIL we will be that close.
Comment by m'smom on October 10, 2011 at 4:14pm

Of Course we always think the worst!  I haven't talked to mine, but had a pic and conversation with the DIL.  A wonderful thing to have!  She calls and talks to you so you know what the son is up to.

There are perks with this wedding!!
