His drivers license expires in September, so thanks for the info I will check it out. It would be a problem if he cant get home to renew it.

oh and he is in the Wildcat squadron

Seaman apprentice. He has been in prebuds since Oct. and was med dropped, but plans on going back and try again. so he stayed undesignated and this is where the navy sent him

Mom's make sure your sailor checks with his current state when renewing his drivers license.  I know in Oklahoma the military (and dependants) renews at no charge and auto registration is significantly reduced also.  Geico had the best deal for their (he's married) auto insurance.  It's less than $100 dollars a month for 2 cars.  Virginia Beach doesn't have a train system but there bus lines seemed to be pretty good.  They also have bike trails everywhere.  It's less than 15 minutes from the base entrance to the Virginia Beach Boardwalk.  The lemon lot is right by the NEX.  It's where other sailors sell their cars to other sailors because they are leaving for other bases and plan on buying another car at their new duty station.  It's just a vacant lot.  The car has the price and a phone number to call if interested in shoe polish on the windshield.  Of course, they should get it checked out by a mechanic to make sure it's a good car.

Yes, he's got his own insurance on his vehicle.....but didn't get USAA....Geiko was cheaper......and if you mean drivers license.....his is from where we live and not virginia.....not sure when what happens when it expires though.....my son lived on base too up until just before deployment!!! so he lived on base for almost a year

valteri I just noticed your son just got there as well. My son told me he got a room mate Thursday. Wouldnt that be funny.

Comment by sjtina on July 17, 2011 at 10:59pm

valtameri..so my son isnt the only one living on base? haha

CeeCee thanks for that info. Did your son get his own insurance? do they use USAA? Was it a problem if they have a license from another state?

He heard about the lot before he got there, but I dont think he found it yet. But he did find the boardwalk. He's fresh out of Great Lakes so he was used to jumping on a train.

Oh, on the vehicle.....have your sailor check "the lemon lot" (I know sounds weird) it is where people take their vehicles to sell them, and I think it is on base.......that's where my son got his vehicle!! Your sailor may have to ask around as to where it is but they have some good vehicles there!!!
Comment by CeeCee on July 17, 2011 at 10:25am

when my son got to Oceana, the first thing he said was he needed a car.......we looked around up here and then around there (on the internet) he found one he liked but we checked it out and we were apprehensive about it.....we found a good truck up here but then he decided he didn't want a "truck" so he found a durango (gas hog) but it's very nice, in good shape for the year and he got a fair price. It's now in storage since he is deployed but he likes it.....if they want to go anywhere off base, I do suggest they get a vehicle.....we were down there just before deployment and it is way to far to ANYTHING to walk....and not sure about a unicycle....LOL....that would still be pretty far!!!

Welcome to Oceana sjtina & vaitameri!! And also Welcome to The Bush Cindy SailorMom!!!
