Did you mean woeful holidays?
We have always done volunteer work. And right now I'm working with Molly's Adopt a Sailor projects.
This year we:
packed three days with the food pantry
made meals for church members who have a family person in the hospital
made small treat bags for the neighbor kids
helped send out 200 cards with our church to troopers associated to our members
been in touch with our VFW for upcoming projects
worked Toys for Tots fundraisers
Need any ideas?
In my church, I started a ministry called "Treasure our Troops." I learned a lot and continue to work with Molly's Adopt a Sailor.
Anyway, anytime is good to ask one of your lay leaders or pastors if you can post an article and put out boxes for those in your church who have family members and friends in the service.
We ask Bible Study classes to adopt at least one box. We ship boxes to those who are deployed. Then, every one gets cards--I get cards dontated to me and I coordinate the addresses and mailings. The cards go to anyone stateside, including spouses of those overseas. I make up labels for all our troopers, and then attach them to a varied number of seasonal cards. Then, at all of our church services, I just go up and down the rows and ask who would like to write to a military person. I have a handout that tells them to make their letters chatty, include pictures and articles from the newspaper that are cheerful.
Each one attached to our church got about 17 cards and we had 5 boxes go out overseas. You have time to start this for either Valentines day or Easter. Currently it is only a seasonal mailing, but I hope it becomes monthly.
Here is an established group to help our troopers--we have adopted all branches of the military, not just sailors. This is an idea if you don't have the time to do what I suggest below with my church.
