OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Hi I'm a new navy wife. My husband leaves for boot camp january 7th. I have a few questions about moving to Gl since I was informed that I will be able to live with him during a school. To we get an apartment on base or do we live off base? Also about how much BAH will he receive?
What rate is your husband going to be? he has to be in A school for at least 6 months for you to be allowed to move with him and him to live at home. Whether you get an apartment or live in base housing is your choice. If you live in base housing they take all of your BAH and use it to pay your rent and utilities but you do not see that money. If you live in town you receive that money in your husband's check and can use it for your rent and utilities. if you find a place that does not take all of your BAH you can pocket that leftover money.If your rent and utilities go over the BAH amount you are given you have to pay the rest here is the website where you can find the BAH amount for your husbands rank and just put in the zip code for GL 60088 http://2009bahrates.com/
Hi everyone! My name is Stephany. My husband signed his contract last December and has been in the DEP program since. He leaves August 31 for bootcamp. He is going into the AECF program. We have two sons, age 3 and almost 2.
I have read through all of your posts and I must say I am slightly overwhelmed. There is so much to remember. I want to be able to move to GL as quickly as possible after my husband PIR's. It sounds as though we should hopefully be there before Christmas (his PIR should be in early November unless there is some kind of delay). Do any of you know what kind of timeline I should expect? We are hoping to just live on base so we don't have to worry about finding an apartment. I really hope the waiting list for housing isn't insane. Oh, and how does the Navy move our belongings? My husband's recruiter made is sound as though some movers magically appear at our front door, do everything for me, and then me and my children jump on the next flight and fly to my husband. I'm not a genius, but considering the government is involved, I highly doubt it is nearly that simple. I asked the recruiter what I would need to do to make sure we move there quickly, and he said my husband would handle everything. Nice, huh?
Also, do any of you know about the Exceptional Family Members program? My oldest son is autistic. I can't really find much info about the local school district since I'm not sure where we are going to be living (school districts are required to cover an adequate special education for disabled children from age three to at least eighteen). Thanks!

Welcome Stephany! If your hubs grads early november I don't see why he couldn't get you here in time for Christmas unless the base housing waiting list is long. That's something that changes from day to day so it's not something we can really shed any light on - I don't think any of us live in base housing as it's just cheaper to live in an apartment and save some BAH so only navy housing office could really help you there.

As for it being easy to move? The recruiter was talking about allowing the Navy to move you - which they will do - but you generally won't make any money off the move as you would if you did it yourself (DITY). With two small children it would probably be easier to just let the navy move you though instead of driving cross country in a moving van. I've heard great things about the Navy's mover contracts so I don't think the recruiter was misleading you at least in that aspect.

As for the EFM - honestly no clue as I've no children yet. I would contact fleet and family services 847-688-3603 and talk to them. They'll be able to answer your questions better than I or probably anyone else here and they're really friendly.
Hello, Navywifew2boys, I am a former Navy wife of 20 years and I have a daughter with Autism. The program was just getting started when she was small here is what I have been able to find for you.



The Navy's Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) is designed to assist sailors by addressing the special needs of their exceptional family members (EFM) during the assignment process. Special needs include any special medical, dental, mental health, developmental or educational requirement, wheelchair accessibility, adaptive equipment or assistive technology devices and services.

In the Navy EFM Program, the primary function is the PERSONNEL FUNCTION. The Navy EFMP Coordinators are located at the medical treatment facility, not at the Fleet and Family Support Centers (all Fleet and Family Support Centers have an EFMP liaison). The Navy EFMP Coordinators serve both Personnel and Family Support functions, but with an emphasis on the Personnel function.

Personnel Function

The goal of the EFMP is to ensure the special needs of the EFM can be met at a new assignment location. EFMP enrollment information enables Navy detailers to proactively consider a family member's special need requirements during the assignment process and to pinpoint the assignment to a location with appropriate resources that address the special needs. Successful implementation requires up-to-date enrollment information and extensive coordination among the personnel, medical, and educational communities.

EFMP enrollment is mandatory and required immediately upon identification of a special need. DD Form 2792, Exceptional Family Member Medical and Educational Summary and DD Form 2792-1, Exceptional Family Member Special Education/Early Intervention Summary are used for enrollment.

Command points of contact and Navy medical treatment facility (MTF) EFMP coordinators can assist service and family members with the enrollment process.

Sailors may be reluctant to enroll because of misconceptions that EFMP enrollment may limit assignments and career advancement, or preclude family members from accompanying sponsors on overseas tours. These negative perceptions are not supported by fact. Sailors enrolled in the EFMP have always received equal consideration for accompanied assignments and for promotions.

Please contact your local MTF Coordinator for assistance with enrollment.

Hi :-) I know this is a old post but was hoping maybe you could assist me. My husband is graduating soon at RTC and then heading to Pensacola for A school. Our son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS and was looking for info on the EFMP and what benefits would he know that we'll have tri-care. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Have you read this yet?   His medical will not be a problem, what this mostly does is make sure the military member is stationed where the family member can receive appropriate care.

Once they have him enrolled, then you move onto the Echo program if necessary.  You husband will need to initiate the enrollment once he gets to A school, pretty sure he has to generate the paperwork as the sponsor.

My husband is is in BC right now, and is signed up for AECF.... My questions is this:
How long is the A-School for each? My daughter and I really want to move to GL for A-School, but I'm not sure if FC and ET are over 6 months long. I'm dying to find out if I will be moving or not! Any information on the subject would be nice!

Mandy both ET and FC A school is over 6 months! So you will definitely be able to move!!!! I would suggest going thru the whole AECF wives club pages because alot of info has been gone over and then if you have any additional questions just let us know!! we will help to the best of our ablility!
