My husband is finishing up A school here in great lakes and we think we'll be getting orders to Dalghren, i'm not sure how there housing is there and if there is a long wait list? we'd love to stay on base if possible, but if not i need some recommendations for apartments.

Thanks!

I would most definitely get base housing. The area is pretty tiny unless you go about 30 minutes away to Fredericksburg. The housing is pretty nice.

txnavywife, my son thought that he would get orders to Dalghren too but ended up in Dam Neck. These 2 bases are in the same general area. Here is a link to a group you might want to join. It is for Sailors/families who have Sailors in Dam Neck, Norfolk, Dalghren and Oceana.

The ladies on the Norfolk site are so very helpful. Some of them live there. I am sure they will be able to help.

Is your Sailor a ET or FC?

Congratulations to your Sailor:)

Sandy,

Dahlgren is actually closer to DC, students that go to school at Dahlgren fly into Dulles or Baltimore airport and it's a good distance from Norfolk area.

Our son did go to Aegis school in Dahlgren but was single so he had very nice housing on the base which included a washer and dryer and only one roommate.  He had a couple of friends that were married and they were able to live on base as well so perhaps the wait is not too long for base house for families.   The downfall to Dahlgren is --- nothing is really around there unless you drive a good 30 minutes or more to shop/eat, etc.  However you can do a nice trip to DC or Williamsburg in just an hour or so.

Thanks for the info! i've noticed looking for housing that there isnt much around the base! i'm hoping we get housing on base but i looked at the website and it appeared there is a long waiting list.
thanks ill look into it!

Base housing isn't bad..actually it is better because Dahlgren is pretty sparse. Only I will say if they do have severe thunderstorms (i.e. Hurricane Irene) be prepared to have outages and flooding. There was a couple of times the base had to close because of flooding or classes canceled because there was no power.  We just left in September, but we didn't do base housing. One of my husband's classmate did and it was nice. The other place I would recommend is Colonial Beach. We rented a 2bd/bath condo for a very reasonable price. Its about 20 mins from the base. Fredericksburg is ok but be prepared for a 30 min commute which isn't great to drive especially if you have midnight classes. From what my husband tells me most enlisted students have classes at midnight, days are usually officers, but there are three different shits days, eves, and mids. They just opened a super walmart in Dahlgren which is great because the closest walmart was either in Fredericksburg or La Plata, MD. The commissary and NEX are very small. If you have any other questions let me know, but ARHN is a good resource to find a place. And the staff at the housing office is very helpful too.
