What should I expect for the move up to GL?

I'm planning on moving up to GL when my husband get Ph 2 liberty. He will be in A school for 28 weeks or more at this point, Does the navy pay for the move? How do I know if he will be able to live off shore? Whats the avarage time it takes to finally start the moving process and how do we coordinate?  or would it be wiser to rent a furnished apartment? will they pay to rent the furniture rather than move it? or should we go with base housing? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

He can submit his Live Ashore package soon after getting to his A school.  It can take a month, and usually they are approved, unless you hit a bad period when the live ashores are misbehaving.  It has happened, sadly. Once he is out of boot camp, he is free to call you.

However, his orders are what get your move approved.  He can set up a Navy move for you through PPO, or you can set it up once he checks in.  You will need a copy of his orders, he can get one faxed to you.  (PPO = Personal Property Office). Yes, they pay for the move if his orders indicate he is authorized to be accompanied by dependents.  A long A school like that, almost certainly.  

The problem with leaving your household goods behind in a location where you are not, is that the Navy only moves you from ONE place.    They will not pay for rental furniture.  A pack out is not very difficult, and if you have more than a few things, it really makes sense to have them do it.  Go to the PCSing/Moving threads for tips and hints and info. (Hint: start sorting, selling, donating, tossing RIGHT NOW).

There is often a wait list for base housing, so many choose to rent.  Once you have his orders in hand, you can call the housing office and ask what the wait is.

Even if his Live Ashore is not approved, you could still move up there and see him now and then.  Some have gone with that option.

 

If I have any of this incorrect, please, folks, jump in!  I know the situation can vary quite a bit with Glakes.

Incorrect. As long as the sailor is an ET/FC, and sometimes IC, they may submit a live ashore chit as soon as they get out of RTC and over to the Great Lakes side. The barracks' SDC office should be able to assist you with all of this, they just have to go in and ask.  Tell your sailor that if they're not getting the answer they want, or enough info from the yeoman in the office, that they can request to speak directly to an SDC.  If they don't have the answer, respectfully request to speak to their chief, and so on.

Yeah, no problem.  Anyone can submit any kind of chit that they want the moment they arrive in Great Lakes. If whoever works in his yeoman office is telling him otherwise, tell him to talk to an SDC.

From ONE place? does that mean if I move to GL and need to move again after his A school from there to where ever his C school is they wont move us?

They will if his C school is long enough.  I meant they won't move your things from Great Lakes and from back home to the next place on one set of orders.

 

If his C school is short, then you will have to sit tight in Glakes until time for the move to the permanent duty station.

I was curious how that would work. If you were living on base, but then had orders to a C school but it was unaccompanied, would your family be able to continue living on base even if you weren't there?

Yes, because of the "temporary"  nature of the school orders.  

 

I could get technical, but I'd just confuse myself.

Thanks for all your help Anti M ! I was worried about rushing the move without even knowing for sure if he was gonna get accompanied orders, but everything is going well so far. I'm taking your tip on starting to sell and give stuff away, so I'm having a garage sale this weekend and donating the rest. I feel like I haven't done anything even tho I havent stoped! I guess I will have to sit in Great lakes for a while then, good to know. pack up all my winter gear for sure! now I heard that the base housig in GL is really slummy, so there is alot of room, and its not on the base per say. what is your opinion? should I suck it up and live there or should I look at somewhere id be more comfortable in? Thanks again!

The base housing is run by a civilian contractor and is very near the base, with the Navy Lodge and a NEX minimart and so on. I hadn't heard it was slummy, though. All a matter of opinion. The good thing about housing is you don't have to worry about bills or the commute, that there will be a measure of control concerning who lives near you and sound, and no lease to break.

I wasn't crazy about Navy housing since I was raised in it, and I was older when I was married Navy. Not crazy about being next to young families with kids. Just me.

I just moved here to great lakes, my husband is an FC and it took him one month to get his Live ashore approved and get a house "on base" the neighborhood is really nice and the people are super sweet, the student housing is apartments, but they are not bad at all. I was worried.... but we have 2 bed 1 bath a porch and a detached garage....

Thanks Heather! I wish I could look at picture cause Im all the way in Georgia, and all I can rely on is what they tell my husband and what he lets me know! So it's nice to get  a GIRL's oppinion, rather than him and his buddies, cause girls can be picky but man I tell you, boys are so much worse!! I just joined the group on facebook, thank you so much for your help Heather, I hope I get to see all the navy wives soon!
