The base does shuttle them out to the airports for stand down, but they have to sign up.  NEVER book the earliest flights, and get them back to base a day early... never, ever book the very last flight.  While you want every minute possible with them, you also don't want to get them in hot water.

Hello I am new to this group.  Sounds like a nice group of Navy Moms though.  My daughter is an ET.  She is in Great Lakes in ATT school until the end of September then she said she starts A school.  She said she is not looking forward to it as it is night school.   I miss her terribly but I am glad that she is happy and very proud of her.  Does anyone have any idea of how much time they get off during christmas.  I think she said it was 5 days and do they get some kind of discount on their airline discounts?  Thanks for the infor?

Kim, what exciting news!!

Your daughter might end up being at Great Lakes longer than April though. My son has been On-Hold after he graduated from (A)school since May 6th.

After boot camp my son was on hold for 6 weeks before starting ATT.  He was lucky that between ATT and A school he was only on hold for 7 days.

GoldnG8r, how long has your son been at GL total? My son arrived at boot camp, June 15th 2010.

GoldnG8r, my son leaves September 9th.

GoldnG8r...it is hard to describe the feeling the first time R called the base "home."  But, that's what it is to them.  So I guess your Sailor is waiting for orders?

navyblumom, know how you feel. I hate saying goodby. I am very happy for my son but just hate the goodby part.:(

Welcome back Helen. Yes, we did miss you.

navyblue mom, know exactly how you feel...we left ours at the Raleigh airport at 4:30.  He just texted to say he was on the train heading into the city to catch the subway thing. He has matured soooo much!  Thank you US NAVY!!!   Just hearing his voice in the house was emotional though.  I think we all needed this visit to kinda rejuvinate us. Especially R. It's been six months since he has been here. Hopefully he will be home again for one of the upcoming holidays.

Helen, welcome back.  I am glad you have heard from Matt.  Mayalsia, my gosh.  What does the future hold for my Sailor?  Wonder every day.  Back to school for me too. I work in the office at our Elem. school and it has been crazy!

Well, I guess it doesn't matter about my son getting married while at A school.  They have decided to get married before he leaves for BC.  Probably will be in March.  =)  Not sure what to think but it'll all work out in the end,
