I think re-enlistment for my son might be a little different. He is enlisted for four years but is deployed to Japan for three years. I think he said that currently they are offering incentives to re-enlist at three years and be moved somewhere else or stay an extra year on his ship with extra liberties. I asked what happens if you don't choose either. He said that everyone seems to want one of the options. He liked the idea of staying the extra year because he would be able to come home for a whole month at Christmas. (I think one of the options included a paid trip home). Of course all that might change in the next two years. I guess relocations can get expensive.
Mary, it wasn't too bad because it was a month before he came home for the holidays. But yea, he was upset.

Kim, that is a heart break to find out he missed it after believing he made. Hopefully his next test will get him there.

Nancy - pass my best wishes on for Thursday's test :-D

Yes...I know they don't wait to enlist but for most (not all) in this group, their sailors are still in school and enlistment is still a good haul down the road for them, of course planning ahead is always wise but since reenlistment bonuses are reevaluated - especially at a three month mark (?) the student sailors have lots of time to worry about that and heck...maybe they won't be invited to stay!

Can someone explain how the promotions work. My son emailed me all excited that he made 2nd class last November. Two days later he emailed to say that there was a clerical error and he missed it by a couple of points. Does he get to try again? He is an FC if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the Perform to Serve link, that is a very new concept to me. I like the idea.

Good morning all...it's 75 here today ;-D Bonuses absolutely flucuate based on the needs of the Navy and with enlistment levels going to record highs with the job market being like it is...so it will be easy for some to believe that our military has a job and has a regular pay check...skip the bonuses.

I hope for our advanced rates that they give consideration that they have made a good investment in our sailors - some will be in school almost two years before ever receiving actual orders to the fleet and if these sailors walk after six years of service I think the Navy loses but that is just my personal opinion. I also believe our country will not be as safe as a result of that...also just my personal opinion.

I believe Nick had told me a number of months ago that the original enlistment bonus for FCs had already been decreased from what he signed in for. We did discuss the reenlistment bonus $$ and his take on it was...that is five years away for me...I'll worry about it when the time comes. I have to agree with him on that.

Sarah - smart move on setting us a Sullivan group, others will follow. Part of me is anxious to find out what ship Nick will get but that other part of me is...don't rush it!

Off to the vet, it's time for Nick's dog annual exam...can I send him the bill?!!!

October 1, 2008 is the first day of fiscal year 2009.

Actually, I think the Navy has so many new volunteers and so many re-enlistments, that the demand to keep sailors in is in flux ... when manning levels go up, bonuses go down. I got one bonus, $10,000. My first husband got the same amount, or was going to, I don't think he stayed in. My current hubby didn't get one when he re-enlisted as an E-6, but may have before I met him. It changes every year.

I think the bonuses for FY 2009 are locked in the budget, once the military has the money slated, it usually stays where it is allocated. New fiscal year in, um, October. Unless things have really, really changed.

We are proud of him too Mabel! Glad that he was able to still get his bonus with the cutbacks to the re-enlistment $$. We will be keeping our fingers crossed for him with the board, please keep us posted.

Kellie - every Navy wife deserves to live with their hubby :-D It really can be SO much fun, well the deployments suck but...that will be true no matter where you live!

Marsher!! You make me laugh girl!

CCR - I posted some info on your page about the surface warfare pin. Afganistan would be treated like overseas orders so I don't see your sailor going from seaduty in japan to afganistan...unless he does IA.

Oh Kellie - the life of a Navy wife...have seabag will travel! Regardless of where Mickie gets orders to, you will meet a ton of Navy families/wives and you will do great at any station. Yes - your folks might not like SanDiego!

Steve was very traditional in asking my father for my hand in marriage...he had NO fears to ask him for my hand but he was damn scared to say...and ohhhhh we will be moving to Japan immediately following the wedding!!!
