Thanks for the clarification! I know the program changes all the time, I simply am not up on the current incarnation. Yes, they used to skip the time in rate requirements. But I also went through the old instructor guided program, ET A school was a full six months long, and that only after you got through the multiple holds and the BE/E (ATT). The E-3 was guaranteed straight out of boot camp, I was never an E-2. I don't recall a PO Indoc class. I could have used one, I made E-5 in C school. A full two years in school before I hit my first command, they try to avoid that now. In some ways the system is much better.

Anti M ---- my old FC hubby is still questioning (imagine that) how they do the advancements today. Different now than when you and he went thru the program, he came out of A school as an E4. Now for FCs, most graduate as an E3 - they need six months in rate before advance to E4 so the good news for our son is he will advance before report to his first ship.

I've been working on some scrapbooking projects and hubby found copies of the Navy paperwork for my passport to Japan and...my first military ID card. My things have changed! It used to be ALL about that social security # -- it was plastered on everything from the ID badges to the sailor's mail. So glad that has changed.

FCs don't get E-4 on completion of school? I mean, I know ETs do, but I am not familiar with the standard FC contract. They graduate as a FCSN, not FC3? (fire control seaman - E-3)

But yes Pinemoms, that's one heck of an advancement, LOL!

Unmarried sailors may not be allowed to move off base, usually E-5 before it is authorized. The policies vary, but this one was pretty strict at Glakes. It costs the Navy money to house them offbase, and we know how the military is about money. A school especially wants the sailors right there in the ships. This is even if he is willing to pay out of his own pocket. Should be simple to find out, it is in writing somewhere. It always is. His thieving roomie needs a blanket party.

CCR - I mean.........Patrick needs to get married if he wants to move off base!

Pine Farms - you are adorable! You just promoted your daughter about three paygrades ;-D. While our sailors are in A school, they are apprentices and do not earn their rate until they graduate. So you daughter will not be an FC until then. I suspect she is actually a E2 and will earn her E3 and her FC rating upon graduation. FC2 would mean she is a 2nd class sailor with the FC rating. It's physically impossible for her to be an FC2 at this stage of her Navy career due to the time in rate that is required but she'll get there! The Navy would allow her to move off base because she is married.

CCR - Patrick won't be approved to live off base unless he is single and I believe an E4 or possibly E5 as Jackie indicated. Tell him stay on base and save $$$

Millye - New Sanno hotel is an awesome hotel in Tokyo, we used to slip away for weekends there as well. It was quite plush at the time considering it was a military property. Meaning awhole lot nicer than your typical Navy Lodge! Anti M is right on track that it would be great for a few days while seeing Tokyo but Yokosuka does have a Navy Lodge on base that you would probably want to utilize - you can count on it being clean and reasonable rate.

Hope all of our Sailors enjoyed the holiday weekend, ours had a duty day that I'm sure he will remember. He was assigned as duty driver to the airports and don't you just know...he had to make a run to Ronald Reagan airport. Mind you - he does not know this area as he has only been at the school about a month and did not take a car with him. On top of it - the airport is 90 minutes away and...he got to pick up a Commander. Interesting day for him :-0

Jackie, It was too long, I PM'd you.

Jackie, I'm a little alarmed at something. Patrick says they built some places for couples and since no one is moving in, they have offered to pay him to move in (but I am sure they will have him sign a contract where he is going to have to pay out the Wazoo for the rest of the duration of the lease) and he is so anxious to get away from that roommate that is stealing from him, I'm afraid he'll jump into another situation he will regret. He's near 32nd St. on Norman-Scott Rd. He took a PO (FC) out for Valentines lunch with a couple other good friends and had a good time. I'm so glad he found some A school friends there.

Karen, I also have the no contact kid. Unless he's calling everyday to see if I sold his car, LOL! It would have been nice if they have met up together in C school - but my son says he has GL friends in SD now, so not so lonesome I guess.
He is one of 3 who have a 96 in their C school classes, so being 3rd is pretty good, I'm glad he is studying - I thought he had his mind too much on cars and girls!!

Alicia, no, Reagan is an appaloosa horse born on the day of RReagans funeral. He's always figuring out how to be an escape artist.

People either love Japan or really hate it. I loved it ... everything, even living in the funky old Japanese house.

Millye, the New Sanno is nowhere near any bases, so it wouldn't be good for an entire visit, but for a few days it would be great. The rooms are nice, but the suites are terrific.
