My son finished A school in March. About three weeks prior to the end, based on class ranking, they were able to choose their next assignment. It sounded like they got a list of options, maybe had hours or a day or two to think about it, and were called in order, to choose. My son with a low 90 average was mid class. There were five of his wanted openings at the beginning and only two by his turn. So he was able to get what he wanted. Good luck to you and your sailor!

Thanks Renee- he did say he is in INDOC now basically covering the same stuff they did in boot camp. About when will he get orders for a permanent base? I'm guessing about half way through? I know others with shorter A schools have already gotten theirs while in BC.

ETs have so many NECs, I'd guess it would be related to tactical/mobile communications.

Has anyone ever had an ET get orders with a Seabee battalion? Or been an ET that got Seabee orders? What kind of NEC is that?

Jacob94mom,

my son's PIR was 5/30 and he just started his ATT school last week, so your son will probably be on hold.  They have to go thru indoctrination first, with classes on drugs/sexual abuse/etc first.

Question: my son just had his PIR, is at GL for AECF- ET. He says this week is pretty much introductory classes. But doesn't know if his real classes are on hold or not. Is that true that he wouldn't know yet? Just wondering, he tends to to pass on all the information.

When my daughter was in Great Lakes, she and other Liberty Buddies would all chip in on a cab or take the metro and explore the Foodie scene in Chicago and surrounding areas...fabulous! Plus they found Navy discounts everywhere. I know she was glad to move on but it seemed that they had plenty of time to explore the city.

I was an ET.   The school itself is not that bad if they study.  The liberty phases are annoying, but it teaches you patience with the Navy way of doing things.  The constant cleaning is actually a good time to relax and meditate while doing something mindless.

They should take advantage of being close to Chicago, go to the museums and concerts, take advantage of the MWR discounts and the free stuff to do in the city.  MWR  (Morale, Recreation and Welfare) runs a lot of great programs, including a lot of sports programs.  Use them fully on their off time.

Great Lakes is never looked at as an interesting place, everyone is always ready to leave.  I sure was.  But actually, there is a lot of value to experience there, and they should enjoy their relatively stress-free student life.

And no dating other A school students.  Biggest mistake of my Navy experience.  Just do not do it.

Hi all! Joined a bit ago, but just had PIR 6/13. My son will be in ET school. Right now he is in INDOC (?) Then ATT- any advice will be appreciated! Looking forward to this new phase of his Navy career.

Actually, the graduation rate for FCs is quite good.  Some end up on mandatory study hours, but honestly, the Navy teaches it a step at a time and most get the hang of it.  In ET A school (which is very similar), we lost more to underage drinking than to academic failure.
