I just want to say something in this forum after having read the thread about the move to repeal Don't ask - Don't Tell and the subsequent questions regarding individuals' sexuality as well as the apparent notion that anyone who is "progressive" is condemning religious and family values. When I talked to my son a few weeks ago - I told him that I had not "outed" myself to any of his friends' moms. And he said..."i don't care. My friends here all know - they've seen the pictures of you and Melissa. They don't care - not sure about their parents - but they don't care."

Now - I am NOT in the military - my son is. Frankly this tip toeing is for the proverbial birds. Here I am - studying theology and pastoral studies because I want to be able to help people and because I have a deep faith in God myself. I can assure you that I do not look at other people's opinions and values as lesser than mine or anything of that nature.
I do not - in any facet of my life attempt to either promote or hide who I am. Despite my differences of political thought - I have MANY friends who encompass a wide variety of views from Evangelical to extremely liberal. They may not or they may agree with me. They may understand my point of view or not. They may..just may...think that may relationship is "sinful"- but they do not attempt to change me and when we talk we look for common ground.

I enjoy political debate. I think that this country was founded on the idea that we have the right TO debate issues. I think that is fine on any website for any purpose. However, i am here because my son has chosen to serve his country -- and I support that decision and believe it is noble. Let me say this - I hope when he has the ability to help a fellow sailor - a fellow American - or a fellow human being - that he looks at them as a human being of value. God forbid his duty forces him to ever take a life in defense of himself, his fellow sailors, or this nation - I hope he recognizes the gravity of that despite the need.

Obviously, i do not believe in the current policy. I can tell you that I don't think that the vast majority of people who happen to be gay are looking to go into the military t make a "love connection" or because they MIGHT get to share showers. That is ridiculous and forgive me - but indeed ignorant. The majority of my friends are straight and I have many many times shared a bed with them ..and let me assure you the thought of "romance" was never in the air. LOL.

Sorry, to be so long winded.. but I am deeply offended at the notion that ANY mom on here - anywhere would be concerned about the sexual orientation of another mom. It has ZERO bearing on what this site was started for. I have many military friends who are straight and they have NEVER made me feel unwelcome....

I am progressive. I am gay. I am Catholic. I love God. I love my country. I love my son. I love my partner who is a terrific human being. And I am not ashamed to say that.....
