I just had to share, Nick sent me a "care" package and it includes a set of pineapple salt and pepper shakers as his dad is always telling him he is with the pineapple fleet but he also sent me a Dashboard Hula Doll. I just love her - she is going to be so great in my convertible!!!

Good morning ladies, Wicked storms here last night and now rain, lots of rain. Hope it is not a replay of the September floods.

San Diego is a wonderful place to be stationed. Perfect weather all year long and so much to do there but it is expensive so living and eating on base will help them save $$$. And California is a good distance from us, we have a few more miles than that to see our sailor - he is stationed in Hawaii. Good for him...hard on us but he is enjoying it.

Congrats Dale, we know you are proud of your son and this is a great place to brag about him! Heck - only another Navy mom understands that pride! Our son had a C school and he received Honor Grad for his class last August and got a beautiful certificate that is worthy of framing.

Arlene and Grammy, they really can save some good $$ if they take advantage of base living and the galleys for food in their early years. Even living in HI which is really expensive our son just bought a new car and paid cash for it and still has a very healthy account but he's always been frugal with his money since he was young.

The uniforms and even meals are confusing but on the meals, there is a line item on the LES (pay statement) where the Navy gives them $$ for eating and then another line that deducts meals. So some folks think they are charging our sailors to eat and that is not the case - it's just an accounting procedure but you really need a class on how to read those pay statements...they have always been tricky!

Uniforms they do get an allowance once a year - I wish I could save that really covers the cost of their uniforms but with all of the changes to the uniforms this past year or two, I think that allowance falls short of their costs.

Congratulations to you and Joey for his A School graduation today. My grandson will be in San Diego till the middle of June, he finished his Boot camp on March 12th and went straight to San Diego. They were late starting the school there so only about 2 weeks of it so far. He will still be there when Joey gets there. There are two bases there, one across the street from the other etc but not far. Maybe they will meet up. His bunk is the U shaped building across from the baseball field, right on the water....and he loves it there but he does get home sick some. My Coast Guard grandson just went there and spent a few days with him before going to his next assignment in Alameda CA which is near San Francisco. They had a good time together. I would love to go out there but so far from Statham, GA.

To sportymom. my grandson just finished boot camp and he needed very little money. All depending on how far your mail is coming from, they receive their mail in just a few days. Keep those card and letters coming, it is so good for their morale. Near the end of their boot camp training, they get to make short phone calls home or to loved ones. Cheer up, you'll be hearing from him before you know it.

My grandson finished 8 weeks of Boot camp on March 12th. He left home with the amount they allowed him to have to start off with, can't remember if it was $25. or $50. but i remember counting his money and making sure he had the amount they allowed. Then he did not need any other money. They did get to go to the NEX and buy personal items etc. But then near the end of Boot Camp, they took them and let them all set up their own banking accounts. Then the deposit their pay into the account. When he finished boot camp he had around $2000. in his account. he felt so good. After getting to San Diego he has spent money, of course they make them pay for all their uniforms..My husband could not believe that they made them buy them for when he was in service back in the early 60's they were furnished. But my grandson has been able to save quite a bit of money, yet he has spent lots too. He is saving at least $500. a month, which is pretty good when you consider they want to get off base as much as possible and spend money. Got a tattoo and I would have been hollowing the whole time, for I dislike tattoos but others like them. That was like $250.00. but at least he got one that will not show on his arm with short sleeve on. Then he went sky diving, I think that was $350. or something close to that... so they can figure out how to spend it. My grandson in the Coast Guards has been in 2 years in June and he has saved over $25,000. So you would have to save more than $500. a month to have that kind of money in that time. At $500. it would only be saving $6,000. a year. They really don't need a lot of money if they live and eat on base...they have everything they need. My grandson will finish up his A school the middle of June and will come home for 2 weeks before going on to Norfolk. he is already a E3 and they have told him by Sept he will be E4. Well, enough bragging for me. I love my grandchildren - oh my grand-daughter is already in Norfolk and doing well. We get to hear from her often even when they are gone except in certain areas they are able to call home or get on the net. Good luck to you and all of you mother, fathers, grandparents that have children serving our great USA.

Hello... I have a question if anyone can help me on. My son Tyler is going on his 3 week in bootcamp. Do I need to send him any extra money? and how long does it take for them to receive there letters? I have written 3? Do they get there check deposited while in bootcamp? Thank you so much I really appreciate the input.:)

(((( Grandma Mary ))))) Congratulations!!!! :-) Wonderful news!!! Will she be able to get at least one more semester out of the way before baby time? Not the easiest way to do it, but an option.

((((Wade142)))) Glad that you are getting news, and that there is the beginning of a plan being formed. I think my sister in law just got radiation. I'll check with you to make sure my memory isn't cloudy on this, it was so long ago. I'll continue to pray for you.
