Well....my suggestions is "Not" to stay at a hotel in downtown Chicago. Your main purpose is to have as much quality time with your son or daughter as much as possible. We still had a "Great" time visiting downtown Chicago with the whole family, BUT, we stayed at a hotel with-in 6 miles of Great Lakes BC, so Chris could just hang out comfortably, as long as possible, with out worrying about a long drive, before reporting back each night.
ladyayp - the pass that was taking care off she send me the password for that, also since her boyfriend is an Army we don't need the pass. That time we went to Fort Gillem they just look at his ID ours, the registration and insurance for the car that's it. We are in without a problem. I think I don't need your advice okay thanks.
Pam - Corpsman Mom - Hotel is something that Matthew and I are still undecided. He really wants to stay at the hotel downtown Chicago where it is made of all glass. I never look it up yet but then I found some hotels that he might like closer to the base one of them is Ramada. I was reading the policy for this one, once you got the date you are lock in to it so if Avia change the date we are out of luck because we have to pay in full if cancelled. So I will let Matthew take care of that. Right now I will not worry about it. Thanks
Ladyayp thank you for the info, I grew up in a Navy family and once married to active duty Marine so I live a military life myself. My husband is an Army but he decided not to stay, we both have knowledge about the Military life; I know that the Navy owns Avia. I have no problem with that, woman in the Navy is Challenging, Exciting and Rewarding. But above all, it’s incredibly empowering. That’s because the responsibilities are significant. The respect is well-earned. The lifestyle is liberating. And the chance to push limits personally and professionally is an equal opportunity for women and men alike. http://www.navy.com/inside/winr/training.html Avia will enjoy the Navy life. I know the rules after PIR. What not to bring back to RDC the time limit for liberty as well, I have a copy of the schedule for the graduation too. I am well informed by the rules in the Navy. The only thing Matthew and I are not decided is the hotel. I also know the directions how to go to the PIR. The military are very strict we have no problem with that.
For PIR we stayed at the Springhill Suites on Fountain Square Place. Two years ago the cost was about $100 a night. When I went back up by myself four months later for my son's graduation from A school, I stayed at the Sleep Inn on Bittersweet Ave. Nothing fancy, but on the same road as the Training Center and only about a mile away. I believe it was around $80 a night.
Downtown is easily an hour away from Great Lakes.
Chinadoll, To help you, I remember my son sending home items such as info as to the graduation. I looked in his book and remembered that we had to have a vehicle pass to get on the base. Your daughter will be able to help you with this. I also remember staying with a block of the base but do not remember thename of the hotel. All graduations are different, but just so you will not be disappointed, try to remember that she is goverment property now, lol. Wiswh you the best. (Note) Katlanta, I did not mean anything in reference to my comment. I am just trying to help, especially all the newcomers.
mombychoice I sent you a message this a.m.
PIR is awesome, I have never experience anything like it. It makes you so proud to call them your Sailor! I know a lot of moms said their Sailors were so tired all they wanted to was hang around the hotel. One thing is for sure you have to try a true Chicago style pizza while your there! :)
Good morning Katlanta, you give me lots of good information and this really help us decide where to stay. My husband still wants to stay in downtown but told him we have to stay close to base because we don't know how much time we have for Avia. So I decided we stay outside the base. For me close to base is better, but all the seightseeing is in downtown. It's so confusing so well play by the ear right now if all I need was 30 days it's still way far ahead to do any reservation. Thank you for all the information your the best!!
Katlanta, your the best and thank you for the info I was reading the graduation they have so many rules that we have to follow. We can get pass but her boyfriend in an Army reserve so we can go to the gate without a problem. Just like at Fort Gillem we went in without getting a pass. I want to stay at the hotel inside the base this way we are closer to Avia My girl friend told me that they stay inside the base because her sons graduation all I have to do she said give them the information also it is way cheaper too. I think you have to talk to Matthew about that at the meet and greet he doesn't listen to me all the time.
