We recently got married (2 days ago) and he is about to ship to his first duty station. I plan to follow after I finish tying up a few things here, so he plans to get us all set up there. There are a few questions I have that I would rather have answers for from the spouses that have already been through this experience!

1) Is BAH one set amount that you receive no matter how much your rent is? I was hoping that it is so that I can find a place where the rent is less then BAH and I can use the difference to pay the utility bills and whatnot... I just wasn't sure if they ONLY give you the amount for rent or if its the amount on the BAH Calculator no matter how much you spend on actual rent.

2) Can we get BAH without having signed a lease for place to live? I was hoping to use our first BAH payment to pay for the deposit as wells as any fees to start up the utilities.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, this whole experience has been wonderful, and I am more then excited to finally join the Navy life! Thank you guys for any advice you can offer!

Hi Ashley!

You will get the full amount of BAH regardless of how much your rent is, unless you live on base then they take it all.

You also will get BAH as soon as your husband gets your info in and they process it. You don't have to have a signed lease to start earning it.

Thank you!!!!

Hi Ashley,

First of all Congratulations! Welcome to Navy Life!

To answer your questions....

1) Yes, you will receive the BAH amount you see on the BAH calculator no matter how much your rent is. If you find a place for less than the total amount of BAH, you still get that money. This is very common to do! Just be aware, he receives his BAH split between both of his paychecks. So he'll see half his BAH on his 1st paycheck and half his BAH on his 15th paycheck. You will not receive the full amount at one time. So keep that in mind as you are thinking about what you are going to do in regards to your questions #2....

2) No, you do NOT need to have a lease signed to start receiving BAH. He will start receiving it once you are on his Page 2. But also, keep in mind most likely you will NOT receive it immediately. In the best case scenario, it will take 1-2 pay cycles before it will show on his paycheck (he will receive retroactive BAH - so he will get paid BAH from the time you were married. He should get it all on that first month he starts receiving it). Depending on how long the paperwork takes to process it could take up to 3 months, or more in some cases.

Thank you for the in depth info! I feel a much better knowing how the process works!!!

You're welcome! I didn't want to give you too much information so I tried to simplify it as much as I could. Let me know if uou would like me to clarify anything!
