@JS, that is frustrating, and yes, it should have been caught earlier. A mistake at MEPS, moreso than by the recruiter. I don't know what he will be offered, hopefully they keep him on schedule! Let us know what happens, and tell him to hang in there.
Yeah, the Navy makes your plans for you some years.
Technically they have the same chance, but I know of two cases where they were married prior to orders being issued as unaccompanied, and the orders were adjusted to stateside when the detailer got the correct information. The Navy tries not to send the married ones if there is anyone else to fill the billet.
Join one of the HM groups for details. I can look up how long HM school is, but there are often holds and wait times, and the moms, etc. on the specific group will have a better idea of "real time" at that command. Six months I think, off the top of my head.
But most certainly, don't rush the wedding if you don't want to. Just gather as much information as possible so you decision will be informed, no surprises. I hate it when we get new wives here, unhappy because they're going to be stateside while he's gone for years. Then they bad-mouth the Navy for their choices, which irritates me (I'm a vet).
They receive their orders toward the end of school, or after if there is a delay (common for ETs, I don't know about HMs). The timing for marriage would be at least a month before graduation, to be sure the paperwork goes smoothly. I wouldn't make it THE reason to marry during A school, but it is A reason to time it for then.`
I don't know how strict SA will be on permissions (they are all supposed to submit a special request chit when marrying). They can't be denied marriage, unless one of you is under legal age, but they can make it easy (Goose Creek) or annoyingly difficult (Great Lakes).
