I've been looking everywhere for which documents (drivers license, marriage certificate, birth certificate, ss card, etc.) is needed after we get married.
The problem is I don't have my birth certificate with me (in WA) and the plan is to get married later this week (stupid WA and their 3 day mandatory waiting period) and then get paperwork done before I leave for home next week. I've looked up the requirements to change my name with the social security card and I don't need the birth certificate for that. But I'm confused about the military stuff.
I've found one website (on RAPIDS) that's saying I don't need my birth certificate. That as long as I have my drivers license and ss card, I'll be good to go. But I've found another site that says I need my birth certificate. Which is right? Also, would I have to have my ss card with my new name on it or will my old one suffice?
Next question. What will he all need to update his page 2/enroll me i DEERs? He seems to think I can just give him my information and he'll pass it on and they'll type it all up and we'll be on our merry way to Pass and ID. Does he need any of my documents? And if so, can we get by without the birth certificate?
Last question/request for info. Can some of you walk me through step by step (preferably those married after boot camp since they take care of everything in boot camp) what the process was paperwork wise after you got married.
Thank you! :)

Do you know where you will be doing the paperwork on which base? You can call them and ask.
This is the form to enroll in DEERS/apply for an ID card.

I found this memo:
http://dcp.psc.gov/PDF_docs/DEERS_Cover_Memo.pdf
All it says is "two forms of ID" and references a list of acceptable IDs. The link in the memo can be clicked, then scroll down to page five. If I am reading the chart correctly you can do driver's license AND an SSN card, and not need the birth certificate. I would print it out and have it in hand in case they question it. Sometimes the people at the desks don't actually know the rules, they know what they've been told.
I'd order a BC for the future though. You'll want one if you ever decide to get a passport.
I guess he is going to do everything on the ship and then hand me a packet and I can go over to Pass and ID.
Thanks for your help! This is all a little overwhelming.
Thanks! I guess I'll try to go and do it and if they turn me down, I'll just do it back in Ohio. I do have a copy of my birth certificate, just not here in WA. I would need my parents to dig it out back home and fax it to me.
I would say it will depend who you run into that day and what base you are at. TBH. I know in Everett they were super strict about getting IDs especially without the spouse present right before I left they loosened up. Call them before you go in ask what their office abides by. Also with the page 2 I have been told he needs all that information to put you on but my husband didnt have any of the papers or cards. He simply wrote my information down and took it in. Now they sent it back twice bc they thought he spelled my name wrong bc of the first "a" but they finally accepted it.
Idk if this was just my husband or if its true throughout the whole navy but when we got married he first got told since he would be going to his first command soon to just wait to add me to his life insurance. WELL about 3 days later he got pulled in and yelled at saying if he didnt add me right then they were going to find me and tell me he was lying about his insurance policy lol. He asked me if I knew.. unfortunately for him already did my dad was Army lol. But he was so confused bc they were all telling him different things but def get that updated asap! :) lol
Won't it take a while to get your marriage license back? Or are you getting married at the courthouse and get it right away? I know my brother got married a while back and the pastor had to send in the marriage license and then they had to wait for it to get sent back to them and getting his new wife her id and added to everything took about 3 weeks when they thought they were going to be able to go in the next monday and get it all done. Just a heads up for you if it ends up being the same way.
Hey Emily! Congratulations on getting married. Hope military paper work went smoothly. I just wanted to chime in about paper work POST wedding (specifically, changing your name). There's a website that can help expedite the process for a fee: missnowmrs.com. But it's also easy enough to do it yourself.
When I got married on New Year's Eve, we had to sign 3 copies of our marriage license- 1 and 2 for the Charleston County Clerk's (I think our officiant may have kept 1 copy but not so sure as he was in charge of mailing the other 2 documents). We used our marriage license copy for the military paperwork (Mike's pg 2, getting me into DEERS and getting my ID). No birth certificate was required, just my original social security card and my license. That was all!
As for other stuff- I requested certified copies of the marriage license ($5 per copy here in Charleston; received my copies approx 1 wk later) to submit to Social Security (to request a new card w/ your new name, you just fill out a name change form and provide the requested documents; took about 2 weeks) and the State Dept to get a new passport (about a month). I also needed a certified copy of the marriage license to change my bank account info (and get a new debit card- about 10 business days). You do not need to to submit any paperwork to get a new credit card reflecting your new name, however. Depending on what state your license is from, you may or may not have to go there in person to get one with your new last name.
Good luck!
Thanks, missa!
We got married on Friday night. So we had to wait until today to do any sort of paperwork stuff. I ran to the Auditor's office up here and got several copies. (1st was free since he is military and then we got 5 extras... the judge suggested we get like 10. baha.). Then I went to the SS office and changed my name.
He's on duty today, so I'm going to bring him a copy tonight when I bring him supper and hopefully he can take care of page 2 and DEERs tomorrow during the work day. And fill out his part of the paperwork for my ID. I may have to wait to get my ID until I get home since I don't have my birth certificate. You said you didn't need it? I'm hearing so many people that did, but some that didn't. Grrr the military and their inconsistencies. :)
Nope. No birth certificate required on our end. We got it changed here in Goose Creek and all they asked me was one form of ID (license) and my social security card (they understood that I would be changing my name and just asked me what my new name would be so it would be reflected on my military ID). They also asked to see a copy of the marriage certificate. This whole process (him changing his page 2 and me getting a military ID) took about 45 minutes, 25 minutes of which was just waiting in the sign in area. I guess we got lucky? :)
