OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Getting Married in August! Help please!!!
Hey guys!
Can someone please help me!! ha, I am getting married in August and I have no idea if there is stuff I need to do before we get married! Everyone keeps talking about paperwork and I have no idea what they are talking about or where to find it!! I know that once we get married he gets paid more but do we need to do something to make that happen???? PLEASE HELPPPP! The big day is getting close and I want to make sure I have everything done that needs to be done! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

First off take a deep breath. There's some paperwork that needs to be done with the Navy, but none of it can be done until after you're married.
To change your name, you go to the social security office. That was super easy. Just know your social security number and have your license and certified copy of your marriage certificate.
Once you're married, he needs to update his Page 2. He has to go to his command to do this. You will also need to be enrolled in DEERs and then you can get your military ID.
My husband didn't need anything to update his Page 2, but to enroll you in DEERs either your husband needs to be there or you need a Power of Attorney/a DD 1172. You'll also need your Social Security card, driver's license (a government issued Photo ID), your marriage certificate (certified copy), and they may or may not require you to have your Birth Certificate. Bring it just in case you do.
To enroll in DEERs and get your ID, you go to any RAPIDs site. Here's where you can find one near you: http://www.dmdc.osd.mil/rsl/appj/site?execution=e1s1
The rest of the paperwork I had to do was with my schools and banks.

Thank you so much for responding! But one more thing, he currently lives in San Diego and I live in Rochester, NY so I know I can change my name here I think, without him?? And once were married, what do you mean by update his page 2? And what does DEERS mean?

Yes, you can change your name there without him.
How long will you be in San Diego?
If you're going to be there for a few days after you're married, I would suggest you try to get as much paperwork done there as possible. You can go to the Social Security office to change your name there. You can do this without him. I did it while my husband was at work the monday after we got married.
He needs to update his page 2 which means he just needs to add you as his dependent on there. That's where he'll get his extra income from. The BAH and when it applies, family separation pay. You don't really need to worry about it. If he goes to his command and says he needs to change his Page 2, they'll point him in the direction of Personnel and he can take care of that. When Aaron went for that, he wrote all my information down such as address, phone number, height and weight and eye color and my next of kin information, social security number, etc. That way he was prepared for whatever information they needed.
DEERs is system that you need to be in to get all your benefits as his wife. Insurance, base access, etc. I can't remember what it stands for, but you have to be in DEERs to get your ID and be covered by Tricare. If you'll be in San Diego for a few days, I highly suggest you do this while you're with him.
If he has to go without you, he'll need originals of your social security card, license, birth certificate, and marriage certificiate. If you do this back home without him, you'll need a Power of Attorney and/or a signed DD 1172 form (if he asks his command they'll know what he's talking about). It's much simplier if you bring the necessary documents and get to the Pass and ID office on base down there while you're with him.

Sponsor definitely does not need to be present to get your ID card.
However, if sponsor is not present for DEERs, you just need a POA that states you can enroll yourself. I also had a signed DD 1172, but the station I was at said I only needed the signed form or the POA. I had both just in case. -

I would also suggest calling the base you are going to and see what they require. some are super sticklers about the sponsor being present or you have to have that form. They wouldnt even let people in the office without the right paperwork without a sponsor where I went to get mine. And my husband was out of uniform since we went to an AF Base and it was an ordeal to get on the sign in list lol! but in Everett it was like hey need an ID let me take your picture ok bye lol

Technically, your sailor is supposed to inform his chain of command that he will be getting married. He does this via a special request chit. School commands are the strictest about this step, and they may tell him to skip it in the fleet... but they might not. Have your sailor go talk to his chief, in case his command has requirements such as chaplain counseling or classes on dependent benefits.

oh yes! if he is in school he certainly needs to do this or talk to the Chief!!! My husband was told my 5 LPOs and instructors that he didnt have to fill out paperwork one even told him if he did and caused him to have to do more paperwork he would get mad at him. So he didnt and then his Chief found out he hadnt put in a chit for it. We almost didnt get married bc of it. The Chief told him if he could convince a LPO to let him leave early and risk getting in trouble he could leave to get to the courthouse in time then we could go otherwise no. Luckily, on felt bad bc he legitimately didnt know there was paperwork apparently. but ask the command for sure for the chit!

Once he gets orders those are his orders. They will not change them to add you after he gets them unless they made a mistake and didnt put you on there. If you read some other discussions it talks about that. You have to fill out chits and paperwork for stuff like that before and paperwork to get you added to his page 2 and into DEERs after you are married. to the military you are nothing pretty much until you get married so they will not add you until you have the paperwork proving you are legally married. Thats the paperwork you do after :) I think if he is out of school and not at his command he doesnt have to ask permission
