getting married in great lakes, question! please help

I got the letter from my SR today. He talked to his commanding officer and got the okay to get married on PIR weekend, since he requested permission ahead of time. He told me to look up courthouses close to Chicago where we can get in and get out. I know someone has had to go through this experience before and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to the best place to go.

Yes, right now that is the plan. He gets five days over Christmas right now as it stands so he wants to have a real wedding later, but we are doing it now so I have two years with him and can hopefully transfer and finish school, but thank you! 16 days til PIR :)

He is actually leaving Saturday for Charleston, sc. He is nuke

My fiance and I are getting married on his PIR date. we have to request for a wavier. which is expensive, but that way we can get married within that day because my SR is leaving that next morning at 2 am for texas..

"Marriage licenses obtained in Lake County may not be used in any other county. Both the bride and the groom must apply in person for the marriage license. A license to marry becomes effective in the county where it was issued one (1) day after the date of issuance (unless the court orders the license is effective when issued) and expires sixty (60) days after it becomes effective." 

Both applicants must present identification and proof of age

 

Also the court house isn't open on Sat.

 

Monday - Thursday
8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Friday*
8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

 

 

So if he is leaving on Sat...which means he is going to the airport early in the am, you won't be able to get married.  You are going to have to wait until he gets to his "A" School.

Thank you for that info, I also know of a girl who got married last weekend and she called the courthouse and was able to make the license effective immediately. So I guess I will try to call the same courthouse, and see how it is done.

I've heard they can waive the 24 hour period for military.  It would be good to call and confirm that!

Recommended Times:

During the weekdays, we cannot always guarantee the availability of a judge, so we recommend coming in between the hours of 2:30 PM until 4:00 PM. This is the most likely time that a judge may be available. Mornings and early afternoons are not recommended due to the needs of the normal court call. Also marriages are not performed during the hours of 12:00 Noon and 1:30 PM.
For weekends and holidays, marriages by a judge can be performed during the Saturday morning and Holiday Bond Court. Check below for more information.

Saturday Morning Bond Court:

Saturday morning Bond Court is conducted in the Babcox Justice Center located at 20 South County Street, Waukegan, IL, Courtroom 120. Please come to Courtroom 120 between the hours of 9:00 AM until 11:30 AM.

Upon arriving that morning, contact the deputy or circuit clerk in Courtroom 120 with your valid marriage license and $10.00 marriage fee to get on the court's schedule. Please do not arrive later than 11:00 AM.


This is actually from the 19th circuit court found on the state of IL website, you CAN get married on Saturday, you will just have to get there really early, there is usually a line to get married, and it's first come first serve. Lived in IL my whole life, just 2 hours away from Waukegan, and then moved to Great Lakes when my sailor was in A school.

taypay, If he's a Nuke, then honestly, I reccommend getting married down in SC. I've seen it done before where the girl will go down the following weekend after PIR. He'll get it cleared with his SLPO as soon as he gets down there. I've even seen it where the guy started the housing process with the rest of the married guys since he was getting married that weekend. She brought her stuff with her and stayed in a hotel/the Villas for the first few days. They got married on the weekend (I saw one couple do it on a weekday which would really take special permission from the SLPO since technically they aren't allowed offbase during the weekdays during Phase 1 liberty). Then she moved in as soon as the housing situation was finalized. Overall, I think its much simplier to get married down in Charleston rather than Great Lakes especially now that they're shipping out just about every recruit on Saturday mornings. What's the harm in waiting one more week? 

There's no waiting list for housing down there-- they actually tore housing down last year because they had so much. 

And if you would want to stay in the Villas while waiting for your house, it would be a great option. They're $60 a night with no taxes for a two bedroom. Your sailor would have to book them for you through the ITT office when he gets down there. They're old apartment type houses that the housing people rent out. The two bedrooms have a bathroom, living room, dining area, and kitchen. They come with cable, washer and dryer, kitchen supplies (such as pots and pans and utensils), and even linens are included. They're not the Crowne Plaza or anything, but they're definitely a good option. :)
