Getting married over Xmas leave
hi ladies! my bf and I are planning on getting engaged and married over the his holiday leave. we have already been apart for almost 10 mths and are both really excited to begin another chapter together.
He will be home on leave for 10 days at the end of the month and we thought that would be a good time to get married. he is putting in his marriage chit this upcoming week and has made his superiors aware. we are both NY residents so we want to marry here. I know that there is a 24 hr waiting period but am worried that they may be a wait for a court officiant. does anyone have any advice? we are waiting to tell our families until we are engaged and want to keep it small. if for some reason we can't get married in a court what are some other inexpensive options? It will be cold out here so I am not sure about anything outside now.
I don't like planning and we need to save for my move and we are ready to start the new year together. I am soooo excited! hopefully I will be able to move to him in April.
ps I am over sleeping next to a laptop!

You could google marriage officiants, my husband and I got married also during holiday leave so the courthouse didn't have hours that would have worked for us. We found a non-religious officiant who was able to perform our ceremony for about $140 at the location we wanted :). It was nice for us because we did not want to get married in a courthouse, because we wanted to have our family there, and besides didn't have the time to!
Obviously price and everything is based on who you find to officiate, and we got married in Florida not New York, but you should still be able to find many officiants! -

thanks so much! what was the location you decided on? I am worried that without very much planning or time our option is the courthouse, but both of us want some family there. I'm not sure with a court wedding if we can have other people there (other then our witness). congrats too!

We actually got married on a beach in Florida. We just needed permission to use the park and it was free. You can have other people there in a courthouse, not many because the room is small, and it's a really impersonal ceremony. So you can have the ceremony at your house if you'd like, which doesn't cost anything.

My fiance and I are getting married over the holiday leave as well! He is in Pensacola right now, he just arrived there a week ago. He's coming home for the stand down. We're getting married on the 23rd of December, by my pastor, so I'm not sure if I can offer any advice about the court officiant issue. I just wanted to share that I'm in the same situation as you, because I thought it was cool! Haha, especially since my sailor and I are also New York residents!

awhh congrats!!! you must be so excited! did you find our dress yet? my bf and I are in a bit of a financial crunch right now. it was pretty expensive to simply fly him from WA to NY for the holidays so that in itself was an expense and I have been having car issue which has been using my "saving" money. are you both getting married in church? super happy for you! i know that this coming year is going to be a

Beyond excited! I actually found my dress this past week. We have the same problem - we're trying to save as much money as possible. I'm very fortunate, though, because I have generous and loving parents. When I told them we would be getting married in December, I thought they would lose their cool on me, but just the opposite happened! They've been nothing but supportive, and my mother apparently had money saved up for years for my wedding dress, so I was able to afford something more beautiful than I ever thought I'd be able to wear!
So I know you said you were waiting to tell your family, but perhaps if you do tell them, they can help you financially. And even if that isn't the case, I'm sure there are unique ways you can save - try Google! I always find so many creative and inventive ways to pinch pennies on there. Also, to answer your question, yes, we are both getting married in church. Again, very fortunate to have the thoughtful pastor I do, as well as a fiance who shares the faith I keep.
Sounds like 2013 will be a new adventure for both of us! Whereabouts in New York do you live? I was born in Syracuse.

i am thinking about telling my family. We just don't have dates - or a real location so...I told my sister and her reaction was slightly lackluster, but she apologized and is excited now. My family isn't excited that I will be moving across the country - we are all really close but i am 34, have a career and need to make decisions for us right now. I can always visit.
I found a dress online for $125, it's a really simple lace shift dress in an antique/pale pink color - short, scoop neck with long sleeves and a slip underlay. I am going to a friend's wedding next weekend so I can't afford it now. I know it will all come together somehow. I just need to be really frugal lol. Luckily I do metalwork so I am making justin's ring for him.
We are from the Hudson Valley. When are you going to move? We think that I will be able to move in april. I have a big project at work that should be finished in March. Yay! keep me posted!

I can understand your hesitance, especially if you don't have a set date. My fiance didn't tell his mother until we set an actual date - but then she was angry we didn't tell her sooner. You just can't win sometimes! Haha, but I know exactly what you mean. You do have to make the decisions for you and your fiance, not for your family. That is how I have to view the whole thing.
If you're not looking for a literal wedding dress, I would try looking in a TJ Max or a Marshall's! I found the dress I wore to my sailor's PIR at Marshall's, and it was beautiful and nicely priced. It's very cool that you're making your sailor's ring for him. I wish I could do that!
Actually, I think I'll be moving in January. My fiance just started A school, and he won't class up until January. He'll be there at least until March, so I'm seriously considering heading down to Pensacola with him.

Almost anyone can officiate a marriage, even I'm an ordained minister (Universal Church of Light). I've never done a wedding, but I could, and then file the paperwork with the court. So if I could do it, anyone who can go online can do it. Maybe a family member you love would enjoy the privilege?

that's a really good idea. I just worry about doing that and then needing a location (and having to pay for it). Where with the court you go and that's it right? As long as you can get in. I am definitely going to think about this option - it may be more flexible and meaningful.
