Hi I'm new here and to the Navy life. My husband left for boot camp on Oct 2. and is suppose to graduate Nov. 27 (the day before Thanksgiving). I was just wondering if we get to spend Thanksgiving with him or does he rush off to his A school in Pensacola, FL. He will be there for 21 weeks studying to become an AC (Air Traffic Controller). My daughter and I are traveling to Great Lakes from California. Does anyone know of great discounts or hotels that you recommend? Any information about graduation, A school, AC, discounts will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! and GO Navy!!!!!

Thank you! I'm going to check out the Navy Lodge.
This will be near impossible to answer with a yes or no, as travel arrangements can very so much. But I'd guess yes on Thanksgiving, and unknown for Friday. That is a busy travel weekend, don't know if the Navy is having trouble booking flights or not.
I'd plan for it, because better to be disappointed that he had to leave and you have to spend a bit of time in the Chicago area. than to go home while he was still in Great Lakes. In my opinion. I don't know what you're missing with your family.
As for his A school, that 21 weeks is bare bones minimum. He will be there longer.
Thank you for the information. My husband called me today and said that we can spend Thanksgiving with him.
i herd that someone said the that friday was supose to go as a normal school day..so im not sure i also herd that there supose to get the thursday friday saturday and sunday off
We are originally from Rockford, IL, which is about 2 hours from Great Lakes and an hour and a half from O'Hare. My husband is stationed in San Diego, so we have made that flight SAN to ORD frequently. I have consistently found the best prices on SkyScanner.com. I've flown from MKE (Milwaukee) once, and it was ok. I flew out of Midway the last time and it was a hole. I won't go to that airport again unless the prices are amazing. I was flying early in the morning, so I saw a bunch of freshly graduated sailors heading off to A School, but the airport was dirty and the parking was in a yucky area. Maybe I've just been spoiled because the only other airports I had to compare were O'Hare and San Diego, which are really nice. Anyway, SkyScanner.com. hth.
Thank you. I'm about an hour and a half away from San Diego. I'll look up some flights from there instead. It's my first time flying ever! LOL So I want to make sure I pick the best flight. Your information was very helpful. I'm going on SkyScanner.com right now and pick a flight before they are all gone. My husband graduates on the Nov. 27th Thanksgiving week!
I am traveling by myself to Great Lakes to see my boyfriend's graduation on 11/27. During his phone call yesterday he told me that he is getting the whole day on Thanksgiving as liberty, and he is traveling to San Antonio TX for A-School. I'm thinking that it would be the same for your SR, but it might be different for everyone. If possible I would try asking him in a letter or your next call because he may have heard something!
Maybe I'll see you there. :) I'm traveling with my daughter and maybe my in-laws. I got a call from him on Saturday and he will get it off but I'm not sure if it was for the whole day. I'll write to him about it to make sure. When I talked to him I usually talk about the kids and the funny things they are doing and how much we miss him and forget to talk about the details/important stuff until the very end. LOL Which doesn't give us much time.
Awesome! I'm so excited and happy that he gets liberty. My husband is in DIV 025. :) We booked our flight, hotel and car a week ago. I was searching for the best rates for weeks. LOL But I finally decided to get them because the flights were getting booked. There is going to be five of us going now. (my in-law and my two kids). It will be my first time flying and I have a four year old and a two year old. So I wonder how my two year is going to react. Yes, I joined that group. It's been very helpful. I try to post when I have time but I mostly read everyone's comment and sometimes I find the answer to my questions. Thanks a lot for the info.
I don't have too many tips to add to the other ladies, but if you can handle it I would suggest booking your flight home on Monday or Tuesday. My husband had to fly back to his duty station the Sunday after turkey day and if he could have waited one day it would have saved us $300 on a one way trip alone! Also, clear your browsing history before making a final decision! The prices go up the more you search for it!
