I understand there is Christmas stand down and that they can get up to 10 days, my boyfriend left on August 7th. So by Christmas he should have 12.5 days of leave? Or 10.5 if December time isn't added. But what i'm confused on is how does this effect his leave time after A school? I originally heard he gets 15 days, Which is perfect since we plan to get married during that time. But if taking leave during Christmas effects that what are our options?

He doesn't have to take leave during the holiday stand down, which would save his leave, but would mean he's not home for Christmas. Sometimes, they will let Sailors "go in the hole" for leave, where they are allowed to use leave they haven't earned yet and pay it back so to speak. But that will be entirely up to the command if they allow that. (There are problems with this, because they can only let them go so far over what they've got on the books, and a lot of commands will prefer to "save this" as an option in case of an emergency... Like, say, heaven forbid, but his mom were to die... if he's already borrowed against his leave days, it could make it so he couldn't go home for that.

Also - if he gets a C school, then there is a VERY good chance he will NOT be allowed leave - no matter how many days are on the books - after A school. Some jobs you know that you will have a C school right away, others, it really depends on a lot of factors and he won't know until at least part way through his A school, and some, it's pretty certain they go to the fleet after A school, no C school right away. It just all depends on the school, and what the Navy needs.

Something else to consider as well, if evereything else works out - he doesn't have a C school right away, he's able to take leave, etc... You're able to get married whrn he's graduated... Since you were not married when he got orders, they won't move you to where he's going to be stationed - and moving yourself could end up being quite expensive depending on where he goes. Have you considered getting married during the holidays? He would have to talk to his command, and it would require some flexibility with your dates, honeymoon, etc, but this way, you have a much better chance of being on his orders so the Navy will move you, and you will be getting Bah while he's at the school...

Good luck to you both whenever you get married though!! I know this is probably a bit confusing and a lot of things to consider and think about, but overall, once you all get married and settled at your first duty station it will get a LOT easier!

Thank you! I'm trying to make sense of this! haha.

They are strongly encouraged to take the full time during Christmas.  The staff wants to take leave also, and the fewer student sailors around, the more staff can take off.

And yes to everything SWM just posted.  I'd say marry during the holidays too.  That leave after A school just isn't 100% guaranteed. There's always exceptions.

Okay, do you now when he'll find out if he gets leave? Christmas is just so soon!

They will be releasing the official dates soon.  He won't put in his papers until much closer to the holidays, but once the dates are official, you can count on him getting his leave approved.

Never book a morning flight the day they leave, takes hours and hours to process out all the students.  Get him back one day early, winter travel to Great Lakes is iffy and even if he has real travel delays, he can still be considered UA (unauthorized absence).

Thank you so much! You're so helpful!
