Hi I just wanted to know anyone's experience with on base housing especially in Illinois during ATT & A school . My husband is FC and he will be there a while so we just decided to move me up there but I am confused on how this whole on base living situation. My husband said they'll take away our BAH and we have to pay rent ? Is this true if so can someone explain to me how that works and why? He got the keys on Friday and I will be getting there Sunday . Also does the navy pay for this move ? we have tons of bills to pay and need to save money we are both real young and really just want to do what's best for us and save as much money as possible can anyone give us any advice on what to do ? Another question of mine is when I get up there I need to get a job and wanted to know how I can get a job on base and if so how much do they pay ? Thank you

I'm not familiar with the rules for there as far as moving but if your able to get housing on base then it sounds like they will pay for your move as well. As far as BAH basically how it works is if you live off base they give you an allowance for housing which is BAH. If you live on base that money automatically gets taken out of your paycheck instead of you getting the money and having to pay a landlord with it. So you don't have to pay rent on top of it when you live on base, you just don't see the money that you would usually have to use to pay your rent each month. It's nice because you won't have to worry about paying your rent or utilities on time each month. That's automatically taken care of. As far as jobs it just depends. If you want to work at the NEX (Naval Exchange) I would go online and see what they have available. Usually the NEX website will have jobs listed for your base if they have openings. Or there may be restaurants or something that you could work at on base but I'm not in Great Lakes so I'm not sure what all is up there.
Ok thank you so much ! Y'all have been a huge help !

They don't take away your BAH, you just do not get it in your hands. It goes in his check, then is deducted and given to housing. BAH covers the rent and utilities for the home, so you never need to worry about being late, writing a check, etc.  He also lives right next to the base (about a mile and a half), so the winter commute is easy and he doesn't have to worry about being UA (unauthorized absence).  Base housing is not on base, i.e. behind the gates, it is right next door in a privatized Navy neighborhood, run by Forest City.

Save all your receipts for the move.  Are you getting a packout, or moving your stuff yourself?  If moving your own things, you need to go to a scale at a truckstop, and weigh your vehicle empty, then weigh it full.  Save all receipts.  He can file a travel claim, and CPC/Personnel should be able to help him fill it out.  There should be some sort of reimbursement, although it can take time.

Thank you so much Anti M you are always so helpful and I will always be grateful for you. I would've replied sooner but I was getting everything ready for the move. I'm already moved here and the house/apartments are nice . I miss my family though I'm just a bit sad that I left everything behind to be with my husband but it's ok I know it'll get better . I just packed up my stuff and went in my car so I moved our stuff myself. i took we have no furniture yet just clothes and some kitchen utilities.I also changed the tires the of the move cause I had 2 flats and all the tires were real bad . Yesterday we went and bought food and an house items. He was told by housing by the first of April we have to pay $1,200 then they'll automatically take it out of his check like you said. Is this that right?
Also Anti M where can we is the office to file a travel claim?
Awesome thank you! Do I apply online or print out the papers and turn them in?
