Hi everyone- I figured that this would be the most knowledgeable please to ask this question. I am on a full ride academic scholarship to my state college (I’m in Arizona), and my fiancé is stationed across the country. We plan on getting married in a month or so via eloping. I can’t leave my university because I feel it would be a bad decision when I only have a year and a half left. I take summer classes so that I can graduate early (I just turned 20).  If my fiancé and I do get married, is it possible that they would give him BAH despite me only living with him for summer and winter vacations? My classes are online during these vacations so I could easily live with him if I’m allowed. I don’t want the Navy to think we’re trying to be fraudulent and I certainly am not trying to gain any benefit from this other than being able to live with him for half of the year. His command has limited space in their barracks and automatically grants BAH to most of those that are an E3 or higher regardless if they’re married or not so I figured it might be permissible. My fiancé is an E2 as of right now. I just wanted to know if anyone has gone through or has heard of this situation. I know each command’s flexibility varies, but I just thought I’d ask so that I have a general idea of what to expect. Thank you in advance!

Im pretty sure if the sailor is married/has dependents he will receive bah as long as he does not live on base or if he lives on base, they will pull his allotted bah for housing. My wife is still in bootcamp, my response is based on research.

He should receive BAH or on-base housing for where his school is located while being married IF he is allowed to live off base, I assume this is for A school? Any school shorter than 6 months usually doesn't allow spouses to move with sailors but if that is the case, you should get BAH for where you (the spouse) lives.

Where you are should only matter in terms of determining what amount of BAH you would get (your location or his) but thats all dependent on what A school he is going to.

If he has the choice to have you there and he picks to live in an on-base house then his whole BAH will go to that house (usually all utilities and lawn care are taken care of excluding wifi/cable) but if he has the option to have you there and decides to stay in barracks his whole BAH will go to the barracks. You only get BAH based on your (the spouse's) location if he is not allowed to have his spouse there (a.k.a schools shorter than 6 months and certain rates).

If he is in A school, they require him to live in the barracks unless you are there and he is granted Live Ashore status. The part time situation would not fly.  He'd still get BAH, but for your zip code.  But your post sounds like he's at his permanent duty station, yes? No?

Not at A school:   If he is married, he will get BAH at the with dependents rate based on the zip code of his duty station.  He would almost certainly be required to move out of the barracks soon to immediately after.  He'll get the BAH whether or not you live there.  It is not fraudulent.  It isn't even unusual!   Lots of spouses live elsewhere for work, school, or family.  The Navy prefers them to be in the same area, but cannot require it.

I'm assuming getting married doesn't affect your scholarship?

Missed the edit window .... if you are not in the area full time, he will need to rent, as base housing has rules about the dependents being present for a certain amount of time of the year.
