Hi Taylor! Congratulations on your soon-to-be wedding!
Yes, you can get married while he is in A-school (he will need permission) and it is highly advisable that you do so SOON! You want to make sure you're married BEFORE he gets his orders (meaning where he'll be stationed). Otherwise they won't pay to move you and it'll be a lot more paperwork and headaches later. You can move together if you are married and you are available to move by his report-by date. His orders will say "report to such and such base by this date" and he has to be there before that day, but you can arrive either with him or later on. You will have to set up a move...either a do it yourself move, or one in which the movers come and pack everything and take care of it. You get more money by doing it yourself, but it is stressful. I would recommend that he handles the move as much as possible instead of you because it is a very confusing process and he has access to offices on base that will help with it!
If you want to live on base, get on the waiting list as soon as you find out which base he gets, because sometimes the wait can take several months! If you live on base, they will take every cent of his BAH. You get to keep it all if you live off base. My husband is an E4 and gets around $1200/month in BAH...which is enough to cover rent, utilities, and several other bills. Personally I think it's better to live off base, but it really depends on what base you're at and your preferences. :) Be careful if Forest City manages the base housing where you are...they run the housing here in Washington and I haven't heard a single good thing about them, just major complaints! If you want to live off base, search for Navy Wives Facebook groups, the women will often help you with recommendations and whatnot. Some will even go look at an apartment for you if you haven't arrived yet. I'm not entirely sure what your 10 day house hunting thing means, because my husband and I didn't get married until after his first deployment so we never got that.
Also, when you arrive on base, you will have to do a ton more paperwork. You need to register in DEERS and get a dependent military ID, get put on his Page 2 (insurance and beneficiary stuff), get your car registered at Pass and ID (usually in the same office as DEERS), inform them of your housing situation for BAH, etc. If you want Tricare Prime instead of Standard (this is insurance. Prime means you have to get care on base at the hospital, Standard means you go to civilians), you need to go to the Tricare office and switch. You also need to sign up for Dental insurance separately, if you want it. He needs to be with you for all of this!
Good luck!!!
Yes, that's correct! My husband's A-school was also five weeks (Boatswain's Mate) and he found out in week 2 or 3. So I would get married as soon as possible if I were you! He will probably be on hold for a bit before his classes start though, which will give you more time. My husband's wait time was only a week, but it can sometimes go for several weeks.
