Good morning all,
So we got news yesterday that my sailor just started A school after being there for almost 2 months, which I am very happy about. His schooling is only 5 weeks long and he will be home after those5 weeks hopefully. But my questions are;
1. If he has school for 5 weeks and Labor day is in there, technically 5 weeks from today is a Thursday that he would graduate but since Labor day is in there would he have to be there till Friday to make up for that extra day?
2. When he does graduate either it be on a Friday or Thursday can he leave that day or does he have to wait to leave to go on leave? Also does he have to have a set amount of days or can he ask for how many days he gets?
3. We plan to get married when he is on leave but we would have to take one day to get the marriage license and then the next day to get married and then the third day to go get the marriage certificate and on that same day we were going to go to a base and get me enrolled in DEERS. But we have no Naval base close to us the only base we have is a Air Force base which I know we can go to that to get enrolled in the DEERS program but I know we have to take the marriage certificate but all of my information will have my maiden name on it and not my married name is that something I would have to get before I can get enrolled in the DEERS program?
4. Also how would we go about getting information on housing and how to sign up for it for when he gets his next duty station? And how does that work? We also have 2 dogs a Miniature Pincher and a Beagle Basset mix, can we take them with us to a base or do we have to do off base housing? And do I have to show that they have had all of their vaccinations?
5. Before he leaves A school and gets orders for his next duty station should he tell them that he plans on coming back married so that they can tell his next duty station that information?
Thank you for taking the time to read this, we have been on hold for so long now that I have had all of these questions and now I can finally ask them and tell him so he will know what to do/expect to do.

Also I forgot to add that we have some stuff in storage since we lived together before he moved but how would we go about getting that moved? I mean the PODS is in my name but it has both his and my stuff in it. Would they help us move that or are we on our own with that?

Okay...
Don't worry about Labor Day. They adjust the information flow to make up for federal holidays. If he's supposed to graduate on a Friday, he'll graduate on a Friday. And so on. He will be given an estimated graduation date, wait for him to tell you. Five weeks to the day would be uncommon actually.
He will leave when they tell him. If he has orders, there will be a report date on them, and how many leave days he is authorized to take. A week to ten days is normal.
No one will tell any command he's getting married until he IS married and you are in DEERS. Right now, the Navy doesn't care about you. Don't take it personally. HE can call and ask for a sponsor and let them know he'll be arriving married, but it will be 100% his responsibility.
"Base" housing is not on base. It is privatized neighborhoods off base. Some allow dogs, some do not. Once he has orders, you can begin the research. Renting with dogs can be just as difficult. Once he gets to his new command, he goes to housing and signs up if you want their housing. There may be a wait. His command MIGHT give him some free time to find a place to live.
He can enroll you in DEERS at the AF base. They will probably put everything in your married name since he'll be there. If not, a name can easily be changed later.
The Navy will not care whose things they are moving, but unless he is authorized to move his own personal goods, and I don't think A school students are, moving our stuff is on your own dime. He must call Personal Property and ask.

So he is supposed to start school today which 5 weeks from today would make that a Thursday that he graduates so he could potentially be home on a Friday?? And what do you mean 5 weeks to the day would be uncommon? And when we go to the AF base what all do I need to bring or should I call them to find out? If I need to call them how do I find the number to get me to the right spot? How do we go about getting authorized to move those things? And he has a car can he take that back with him to his next duty station? And we don't want to move our stuff while he is in A school we are wanting to move it when he gets stationed and we get housing, would they help with that?

During A school, there can be bumps in the road. You'd think if they say five weeks, they'd mean five weeks... but with the Navy, you never know when there could be an unforseen delay or additional training gets tacked on. Anything could happen, and sometimes does. So while you can expect five weeks, in reality, you have to hang loose and stay flexible until he has his travel orders in hand.
Checking out from school can take a day! They don't just leave, there's a process and a checklist to go through (medical, personnel, the school itself, the barracks inspection, etc.).
Usually all you need to get into DEERS is your marriage certificate, your license or ID, your SSN, and potentially your birth certificate. I'd make sure you have a certified copy of your birth certificate anyway, it will come in handy. Order one now from the county you were born in.
His orders are what gets an authorization to move things. You can't get anything done through official channels until you are a spouse, which is why I suggested he call personal property on his current base to find out if he even qualifies for his things to be moved. They can give him basic information, but won't talk to him much because he doesn't have his orders yet.
He will be issued orders as a single sailor. That means the Navy will not pay to move you because you are not on the orders. The orders will NOT be changed to add you. Your move to his next duty station will be on your own dime. He might be able to get them to ship the PODS, but I doubt that very much. Sorry.

Awesome lol well I hope that its 5 weeks and good so I will stick to my orginal plan and just get married on a weekday so that way I know he should be home. Also when he takes leave do they count weekends into that too so if its ten days then thats ten days including weekends or 10 business days? Also thank you so much Anti M you have been such a big help to me

had we not known the minister when we got married we would have had to wait 2 weeks after the state received it to get the certified copy of the marriage certificate back, we went up to the army base to enroll in deers.
From my understanding the navy will move you if his orders are accompanied. If c-school is not longer than 6 months (correct me if I am wrong anti m) they will not move you or your things. It will be out of pocket. Also, your stuff needs to be in one place when you do move, they will not go to multiple places. If you guys do a dity move they will reimburse you for moving expenses.
Once you are in the system you should start getting bah for where you, the wife, are located. -

Yea my aunt got her license just for us so she can marry us and the county that we live in is allowing us to after she signs it we can go up the very next day to the court house and turn it in so we can get a certified copy and then go straight to the AF base. He doesn't have C school he only has A school and we was told it would be 5 weeks and we have everything in our PODS in georgia where we lived before and everything else that I have I moved up here in my car which I expect to move that again I am just worried about moving the PODS. And what is a dity move?

You have to be married BEFORE his orders are written for his next duty station if he wants accompanied orders, otherwise he will have to have his orders altered after the fact and that will only be to get into housing and live off base moving your things will be your responsibility if you wait till after A school to get married. Since he does not have C school his orders will be written within the last two weeks of A school to his next duty station... Since you are not married there is always the possibility that he will be sent overseas and the navy is not going to move you over there with you not on the orders or if he has not ranked up you will not be able to go either... Sooo since your aunt has the license he may want to talk to his LPO and get permission to get married where he is at during A school before the orders are written... Best of luck to you

Yea we were going to get married down there and I was going to travel down there but certain circumstances have come up that will not allow me to do that. And i know i wont be able to move over seas with him if that was to happen, but if he is stationed state side then i would like to get everything done that i need to before it gets too late and we have already went this long without seeing one another and another so we would like to be able to spend time with eachother before he is sent out to sea

Hi I'm shocked that it takes that long for you to get your marriage stuff my husband and I got married in Texas and we got 3 certified copies and got married all in the same day they waived the 72 hour waiting period since he was active duty so you should ask your County about that also after my husband finished a-school he took 15 days leave before reporting to where he is now he got that much because he never had to use his leave cause I would usually go to visit him on his duty free weekends instead of him coming down here to Texas

Well we wouldn't have to take that long but if we were to get married in the same day then we would have to go super early in the morning and go down there and then come home and me get ready and him get ready I just think that would be too much to do all in one day but we plan to get married and have as much of a "normal" ceremony as possible and go the next day to get everything done i would love to just do it in one day but i'm not entirely sure as to when he is coming home so this was my best bet on that. And I hope that he gets a long leave that would help is so much and not feeling rushed all the time and he has never used his leave at all despite me wanting to come down there.
