Hey everyone! I posted on here a while ago about making our move, but things changed a little. My husband is an AO and had to go to Lemoore, CA for C School (which we weren't expecting) because he is going to be stationed at NAS Oceana. He is graduating C School on June 21st, and has to report to Oceana by June 27th. He is attached to squadron VFA-103. I am completely lost about the process of moving. We live in Tennessee. We are wondering how to begin this whole process. Is it better to let the Navy move our furniture, or do a do it yourself move? We are leaning towards getting an apartment off base. Who should I contact about coordinating our move? Any information anyone has will help!

they didn't give much moving time that's weird.
your husband should be filling out paper work to move you guys. we did a DITTY move (do it yourself) . He got the paper work needed. we had to weigh our stuff to see how much money we would get . the navy reimbursed us for all of our moving expenses. we went against having the navy move us because it can take up to more than a month to get your stuff. just all depends on how busy they are. and sometimes people pocket money off of a move that's why they do a DITTY. I don't trust other people with my things :). if you have the navy move you, make sure you pack up all of your necessities in your car , as much as you can fit. :) since you know where you all will be stationed, if you want to live on base I suggest you calling them and getting the process going for that. sometimes there is a waiting list so its best to get that process going asap. if you are not planning on living in base housing, start looking online for places to live. since you are so far away I suggest you research the areas to make sure they area is safe. try to get in touch with other navy wives who live there. I bet there is a FB group for oceana wives :) we personally live off base :)

I wrote a blog post on our DITY move, it may help you. I don't know anything about having the Navy move you, because honestly, we really didn't want to have movers handling all our things. Here is my blog post, I hope it helps some. BTW, I think the trasportation allowances for getting you to the duty station (per diem, MALT) will apply even if you have the Navy do the move for you. I'm not sure if he would get them, since he's already there(ish). My husband went to A School in Great Lakes and we lived about 2 hrs from that base, so when he took his leave between A School and reporting for duty, they paid him per diem and malt for traveling from his home of record to his new duty station. He should contact the Transportation Office and Personal Property Office on the base he's going to be assigned to, they will be handling the paperwork and payments.
Also, if you find anything in my post that is outdated or wrong, please let me know! I welcome comments and want to make sure I'm not giving out wrong info.
I personally let the Navy move my stuff the first time. My husband went to the Personal Property Office on base and asked them to help him in regards to setting up the account on move.mil and ask what all he needed to check to get it accomplished and to make sure we got the right allowances. I personally wasn't wanting to deal with moving the stuff by myself. As far as apts, I know a good amount of people actually live down in Elizabeth City, NC that are assigned to Oceana and even farther north so when you are looking you might look at some apts down in that area as well :)
