Hi ladies, My husband has orders to San Diego in August. We are currently trying to decide on housing, on base? Or off? I am currently located in Massachusetts and have never traveled to California. This is turning out to be quite the frustrating experience for us. I've heard that some neighborhoods in San Diego are crime-ridden. Apartment searches online are overwhelming.

As for on base housing, how long are the waits typically? Are the complexes nice or run-down? Do you have a preference over where you are placed?

My final question is about BAH. When living in military housing is the whole amount applied to the rent?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Most of the housing here in SD is off base.As far as I know they take all the BAH if you live in  housing. Some neighborhoods have no waits at all and actually offer gift cards and stuff for new tenants.http://www.lincolnmilitary.com/sandiego/.I think you are going to run into crime ridden neighborhoods in almost any city you move to unfortunately.I think so far I have seen 3 of the complexes Murphy Canyon,Miramar, and Serra Mesa, none of them are run down, they all have newer appliances and  stuff.Feel free to ask if you have  anymore questions :)

Hey there!!

We just moved here, and its amazing!! I really love SD, and hope we get to stay here for some time.

That being said, I guess there are some shady areas, people told me to look out for certain areas before I got here, but now that I am here, the places I have seen haven't been THAT bad....I was expecting like South Chicago or something, and nowhere I have seen yet is like extreme crime and poverty, just be careful and safe and remember its a big city and I'm sure you will be fine.  Anyways, it seems like the closer to the border you are the worse the areas get....but there are exceptions, there are some really nice houses in those areas too, but as a general rule that's what I have been told.

The housing here is run by Lincoln Military Housing, they have a website you can go to and learn all about it.  Most of their 48 communities or so are located in complexes OFF BASE, there are only a few that are on and these are usually really nice officer's housing.  And we just moved into military housing, on the Silver Strand, and we love it!  All of the places we looked at were pretty nice, not run down at all and would be pleasant living in any of them, it just depends on what your preferences are:  if you want to be close to base, if you like it out a ways, if you want a townhome vs appt, if you need a place that allows pets, etc....

And not all the housing takes full BAH....on their website it gives a flat rate for some and that is what you have to pay.  Oh and utilities are included too which is awesome.

If you have any other questions feel free to message me!! We just did our housing search as well so its still fresh in my mind!!

I would suggest you go with military housing if possible; it will be the simplest option.  All the housing in SD is quite nice.  If he has hard copy orders in hand, he can get you on the wait list NOW.  If he has a report date, and knows when he will check out of his command, get your Navy Lodge reservations in ASAP.

We chose not to live in housing, but we are an older couple, with too many pets.  I adore San Diego.

My husband and I are in San Diego now and we live off base. He is at the training command though and it sounds like you guys may be stationed at another base (there are several here.) I have some friends who live at the base housing for the training command and their entire BAH is taken. The homes on base are town homes that are all stacked on top of each other but everything out here is like that. There is a lot to do out here but I don't really care for it that much. It's very noisy and we're used to quiet areas. I hope this helps.
Thanks everyone! I'm thinking that base housing is the way to go. It is just frustrating to move to a new area but I am excited! I will take a look at the Lincoln website!
