Just wanted to say Hi really. I'm very new to this having met my man in church, dated for a short time and then waved him off on deployment on the USS Lincoln...oh well...its a different kind of online dating I suppose!

I'm based in Seattle for work, and the most challenging aspect to our relationship is that my man will return to VA once the Lincoln gets back. As a UK citizen on a work visa my options of following him over to the East Coast are limited, so we face two years of long-distance dating before his contract ends and we can be together.

I'm willing to give this relationship a try, but have already experienced negativity and derision from friends who cannot understand that I might be willing to wait for my man, rather than just rushing off to find a replacement!

In an ideal world I would be thrilled if my man could transfer to Everett and complete his two years here...is that even possible? Would he lose benefits such as opportunities to get education etc (he wants to retrain as an electrician before he leaves the Navy).

A few questions....I'd love to hear from anyone else in the Seattle area whose boyfriend/husband  is on the Lincoln, also how can I best support my man while he is on deployment. I have been emailing daily, but any other ideas along with writing letter would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Send him care packages! Include news clippings of his favorite teams, reviews of his favorite singers, games, and snacks. They LOVE getting care packages! As for transferring from Norfolk to Washington, the only way he can do that is if he is up for orders and they have something available. But you're only up for orders every 3-4 years, depending on your contract. Have you thought about looking for jobs in Norfolk?

He is staying with the ship and going to VA...if he was one of the few who would stay in WA he would have known already.

So when do you have to go back to the UK?  What happens if HE decideds to stay in the USN?

Long distance relationships were always my biggest fear. I think even if you meet a USN Sailor close to you, chances are you're going to be forced to do a long distance relationship eventually for long periods of time. I'm preparing myself for this too, and realizing that there's something special about this long distance relationship, rather than any old long distance. We're the support that's waiting for them at home, and a reminder that they're fighting for our country for something they value. A bit different than what anyone else would think. He's not off and away because of a job and insensitivity to your needs, but because he's serving our country.

A lot of people who care about me think it's too much to wait too, but I think that's what makes us special. Navy girlfriends are necessary! Without us, there'd be a LOT of single eligible bachelors overseas with no one to send them letters and love! One thing that makes my relationship strong is our common love for Jesus and our faith! You say you guys met at church, so I would hope that your church community would be a strong help to you and your man. I would hope that they support you and your decision to be with someone in the USN, because he's not just a man in the USN but a member of your church as well. I hope that helped! :D

Hey! First of all, My sailor is on the Lincoln! :) I just left Everett right before Thanksgiving and I am heading to Virginia here soon!

Second off dont worry about what people think, If they are worried thats ok, but if they are being negative drop them, true friends support you no matter what. So if they arent going to support you then you dont need them all they will do is bring you down.

Loving a sailor is very hard but very rewarding. I would say tons of emails and packages. :) let them know you are thinking of them!!

I highly doubt they will let him transfer up to Everett. Unless they need someone they will not probably. A lot of guys will be leaving the ship due to their contract being up or they are up for shore duty, so they will need people. Like Angie said... he should already know if he doesn't already its most likely a no. You never know with the Navy but if he moves its more like they are gonna need someone somewhere and he will get moved, it wont be because he asked to get moved. If they transferred him on their own accord he would not be punished in any way. Just doubtful.

Thankyou for the replies so far! I love the idea of a care package and I just emailed his Mom to get some more of his likes and dislikes so that I can put a package together. Are there any things in particular that are really appreciated? He loves Taco Bell but I doubt that would ship very well lol! I do have a vaccum-sealer though so I could send some foods etc if that allowed.

Yep I think I have to accept that he is going to VA. Which sucks. I could look at jobs over there but the one I have here in Seattle is secure, and of course in this economy getting a company to sponsor me for another work visa is a nightmare. I could join him in VA is we were married and I got my Green Card, but I think I'd like to let our relationship grow naturally rather than force things along for the sake of paperwork!

He has two years left, and no intention of staying any longer. His plan is to get his electricians qualifications then return to the family ranch and start ranching and farming again. We are both horse-crazy (I'm a horse trainer) and the idea of life on a ranch is just perfection :)

Our church community has been awesome! They all want to email and write letters to him too, they are very fond of him and me, and pleased that we are together. Several of the folk there were in the navy/navy wives so they know just what its like.

I reckon if we can manage to make it through the next few months then we have a great chance. Right now its just about taking it one email at a time. He works long hours and isn't the fastest typer so emails are fairly short and sweet, but it is what it is.

I feel that this guy is worth waiting for, that he deserves my support and respect. I already feel so much pride for what he and his colleagues do. I used to work as a cop back in England, so I have some understanding of the culture and how it is to work for your country and make sacrifices/work long hours.

Well, thankyou again for the replies...keep the support/ideas coming!

PS I'm saving up for the flights to VA already...dang they're pricy! What is the usual protocol for meeting the ship when it returns? Are humble girlfriends (lol)  included or is it family only? I have so much to learn!

you can always send some tbell sauce... and if you go to my page I think you can look at my groups I am part of a lincoln mom page. They have great ideas of what foods to ship and what not to ship. Ladies are throwing out ideas left and right! One Mom suggested the tortilla stuffer that el paso I think came out with! So we shall see if it works! but you should def head over and join those ladies! We are a very active and talkative group! So supportive as well! Feel free to add me too!

Thats so great that his church is being so supportive it will help him so much!! Knowing people care back home still is a huge deal for my man at least! :)

The boys do work super long hours and the days they go back an hour when they switch time zones they work an extra hour if they are on shift! :( You have a great attitude! It will certainly help you out!! My husband types soo slow too lol and they are usually very short and to the point lol. I type short emails to try and email him as much as possible before he has to go.

YAY! let us know when you get to VA I know tons of wives that are so super nice! :) Yes flights can be pricey. If your job is flexible you might sign up for price alerts from companies like priceline and when the cheapest one comes around you can jump on it! As far as homecomings I think they usually open the base up a little more for them. I am sure they do or else most families wouldnt be able to get on if the base was closed. As far as who is there its up to the sailor also. But I know girlfriends that have gone!

PS if you ever need to talk or vent feel free to PM me. I know this is going to be a bumpy journey!

Haha, he loves Taco Bell but not the spicy sauces! I joined the Lincoln Mom group too.

Thankyou for the comment on my attitude. I'm a big believer that attitude=altitude. If my guy and I have any hope of getting through the next few years then we had better have a good attitude and a sense of humor...

...plus if we plan to live on a ranch in WY 30 miles off the paved road with just a bunch of cows and horses for company in a few years time...then we had better have a good attitude and sense of humor lololol!!!
