Hello All :-)

My husband and I will be moving to our first duty station in Oceana VA. I would love to hear about the area and connect with wives. My husband would prefer to live off of base. I have started researching the area for apartments and homes but my searches have not pulled up many places in Oceana.  (Good/ bad neighborhoods) Virginia Beach, Norfolk and Hampton seem to be very close and always come up. Information about relocation would be great as well ( I know there are probably older posts)

Thank you

Tam E

Oceana is the base not the town. It is in Virginia beach. Many people I know that work there live in va beach or Chesapeake. We live in housing and personally in my opinion you can save more money by renting an apt . There are some nice places by the beach that a few friends have lived in, I wish I could give you the names...Norfolk is kind of a drive to get to Oceana. Let me know if you have anymore questions

That clears up a lot. How is the housing on base? My husband and I both from the District of Columbia  and I am considering driving down one weekend to hunt for apartments or home. This has helped a lot, I will!

Thank you Jde

My blog post might help.  I wrote it after our first PCS.  http://www.navyformoms.com/profiles/blogs/my-first-navy-pcs-dity-ppm

Check out AHRN.com - it's run by Navy Housing and is a sort of apartments.com for military members.  Many of the units have been inspected by Navy Housing, some of the landlords give discounts or incentives for mil members.  You have to register, but it's quick and easy if you have your husbands social security number.  Hope that helps!!

Thank you Jenn_NickWifey!!! Now I will not have to search for the post. I recently graduated college and moved home so I do not have much to take as far as furniture. Just clothes and gifts from family and friends. I will definitely check out the site.

Is the term installation on the AHRN referring to duty station? If so my duty station did not appear on the drop down menu.

Installation does mean duty station.  I am not familiar with Virginia, but I think there are several installations close together?  Are you going to the Naval Air Station (NAS)?

Try the "Navy Norfolk Region Mid Atlantic Hampton Roads" option.  Hampton Roads pops up on google if you search naval base Oceans AHRN.  Just keep an eye on the zip codes, google maps or google earth is your friend when you're looking at places and can't be there to look in person.  If you can go to apartment hunt before actually PCSing, that would really be ideal.  Especially if you are going off base, AHRN does a good job, but it can't really gather all the data you will want before committing to living somewhere.

Hi TamE! Oceana is a great location; I hope you like the area as much as we do. Virginia Beach is definitely the most convenient place to live if your husband is stationed at Oceana.  Hampton would be a long drive and I try to avoid usings tunnels or bridges during rush hour, if possible. There are lots of decent places to live around Oceana; you can check with the Housing Service Center for referrrals: (757) 433-3268/3368

If you are looking for a job or just want to get some local information, the Fleet and Family Support Center at Oceana is wonderful. Tel: (757) 433-2912

I have lived in Virginia Beach off and on for years. Hubby was stationed in Norfolk four different times, so we keep coming back.  He finally retired last year and we decided to stay. If you have any questions about the area, don't hesitate to ask!

Hampton is a hike from Oceana (I live in Hampton currently and I never go down there cuz its a headache getting all the way to oceana lol! Also don't be afraid to check out places in NC! I have heard so many people live in Elizabeth City, NC and love it. I think it might be a tad cheaper too. As far as neighborhoods honestly its a toss up depending on what you are used to! I have had people come and tell me I live in the hood and I look around and think damn I live in a super quiet neighborhood full of old people?? And then other people come over and rave about my neighborhood lol. Welcome to the Area! Check out a fb page called Spouses of Norfolk Naval Station too cuz you can ask about suggestions for apts :) Living in DC you can def get down here super easy for a weekend to explore!
