My son will be finishing A school soon, getting his orders and going to his first station.  He and his wife are trying to figure out all of the expenses/allowances involved in the move.  I have been trying to help them also and came across references to a dislocation allowance to "help defray some of the costs of moving"  I found it on a .mil site but my son said someone told him this is not a real thing they get.  For him (an E3 with a dependent) it would be about $2,000.  That would be a lot of help if it is a real thing.  Has anyone here gotten that money when they did a PCS? If so, what did you have to file to get it?

Thanks so much

DLA is a real thing.  He has to go to PSD (personnel) and request it.

Yes, it absolutely is a real thing. My husband got it in august just before we pcs'ed to virginia. He is an E3 with a dependent as well. He got it by checking a box on a form during his class's travel briefing which was about a month before they were set to graduate. He also got calculated mileage (based on number of cars and distance between home and duty station) and per diem for both him and I. We did a dity move and choose to get 30% or our estimated weight up front, but you can get up to 60%. There is a handy calculator that I found, I'll post it in a few minutes. If he missed the briefing or something, he'll just need to go find the travel person, or even just go to the personal property office on base. Doesn't matter what brench, they should be able to help. We planned our whole move from an army base without any issues.
Here's the link - http://www.pcscalculator.com/ hope you find it helpful!

I wrote a blog post on this topic that she may find useful.  It is from three years ago, so keep in mind that things may be different now, but at the very least it will give her somewhere to start.

 My First PCS (DITY) PPM

Best of luck to them!

Thanks to everyone.  This has really helped.  I am relaying all of the info to him.

Hey,

My husband and I just got it, Right before my husband detached from his A school. He had to put in a form for it, and it has to be a move over 200 miles.  We are staying in CA, so that was a big contributor (being over 200 miles). He is going to get it as long as her requests it. Have him stop by relocation, and make sure he has got his housing application in. Be sure to call the housing people and give them a slight nudge. Good luck to your son and his wife, PCS are very difficult.
