Hello everyone! My husband just got his orders to San Diego. This is our first move - we live in Hawaii with our two sons, one and three. I have been looking at different places on Craigslist, and honestly there is such a disparity in the rent for different places that I'm not sure where to go or what's a scam. I've also looked on ahrn's site, and my husband and I are trying to decide what's best for us to save money. Does anyone have any advice? There was also an issue with his pay - they cut it dramatically because someone put down that we were already living in San Diego, and he is still trying to get that taken care of. So right now we don't have that much in the bank, and the Navy is moving us which I am grateful for - but if we don't get base housing I'm not sure when we will have enough for rent and deposit. I heard it could take months to get the pay straightened out. There are also many places that require proof of income 2.5 to 3 times higher than the monthly rent, which he doesn't make right now as E-3. Sorry for the novel! Any advice or suggestions though area greatly appreciated!

Hi

We are stationed in San Diego but as you said unfortunately the rent is outrageous. My husband commutes from Murrieta which is about an hour away. We waited for military housing off base but it took too long. Feel free to message me. There are a lot of families out here that commute to San Diego.
Plain and simple base housing rent and all utilities are paid. Stay there for a year and then look elsewhere. Then you don't have to deal with anything

Have you checked out Navy housing at all?  Some of the neighborhoods have near immediate openings.  Housing is nice, not on base, and honestly, in San Diego every landlord knows what BAH is, and charges accordingly.  Even if you find a decent place to rent, you will have Navy neighbors, as everyone is looking for a deal. That's why I laugh when people don't want Navy housing so they can "get away" from other sailors.  Doesn't happen in San Diego.  It is Navy everywhere.

Commuting is a way of life in SoCal, so expect a drive for him every day.

Craigslist is the worst place to look.  AHRN is pretty good, and there are a couple other sites on google (military by owner).  But yes, rent is high, and there is little help with deposits.  The housing office has a list of no go places, at least they did when we were there. They also have lists of approved rentals.  I strongly urge you to use the housing office to find a place, be it a rental or Navy housing.  They can help.
