Hello All!

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a dilemma my husband and I are having right now. We're expecting our first son to be born February 12th, (Soon!) but I'm unsure of how long it will take for the baby to be on the Tri-Care insurance. I've been using separate insurance for myself to continue seeing my preferred OB but having our son on it is even more cost.  Does he have to be born before he can actually be put on my husband's insurance - how does it work?! Obviously, I'm pretty lost here. Also, I've seen that you can choose your healthcare on Tri-Care Standard opposed to having to use the clinics on base. I'm in Sacramento, CA and my Sailor is finishing up A-School at Ft. Meade, MD., so having to do all this via phone and long distance is a little frustrating...  Any info would be useful, thanks! (:

I think (think!! since I have never had a kid) that your baby will be covered by tricare for the first 60 days on prime or standard(again please do some outside research!!) and then your sailor will have to have updated his page two by then to list he has a new dependent. You can call tricare and they can explain it all to you. but the majority of getting this process started will fall on your sailor. Have him ask at his A school, a chief or someone with kids possibly how to add a new baby to his page two to get that started and then from there you can do most of the rest I think. You might need a POA to get some stuff taken care of. I am not quite sure what you mean when you say does he have to be born before he can be put on your husbands insurance.... I mean they cant cover someone that isnt born yet but he should be covered as soon as he is born. You might be able to use tricare standard to cover some of your extra cost if they will do that. Always worth calling and asking. Yes you can choose between standard and prime do you know which one you have? To enroll your son in prime there is some paperwork that has to be filled out as well. Sorry its not very firm answers but if you call tricare they will clarify for your specific situation. :)

Your baby will be covered on Tricare Prime for 60 days, which gives your sailor enough time to get the birth certificate and add the child to his page two and DEERS.  After that, you can choose standard or prime.

Get a lot of certified copies of the birth certificate, you'll need them.

I believe that if you have standard, all ob care is covered, as long add the Dr/hospital accepts Tricare. Also, I think the pediatric care is covered a soon as the baby is born. We are in San Diego and the on base Tricare office was especially helpful to me, and very kind and patient in explaining the answers to my questions. I would highly suggest you call Tricare directly, that is the best way to get the most accurate info.
