Does anyone know what the pet policy on base is? Im getting married in august to my sailor and he wants to live on base. I have a minpin chihuahua mix. I dont think she will be a problem but Im getting another dog this summer and want to make sure I dont get a breed that is baned. If you know what breeds are baned or know of a website with the list please let me know! Thanks!!!

A lot depends on the base, but most base housing has banned pit bulls, staffordshire, and I believe (don't quote on this one) rotts.  Other than that, if you have more questions, call the housing office of the base where he is stationed, they can answer most of those questions either on their website or over the phone for you.
I have 2 dogs myself and I have gone to the websites and looked at the housing available out of curiosity because my fiance is still in boot camp.  But if you go on each bases website and find the housing you will be able to look at all the places available and it tells you if they even allow pets, how many are allowed, and breed restrictions.  The restrictions are pretty much the same as an apartment the dog you have now would be fine.  Also there is often a weight restriction I have seen on some too...thank goodness I have small dachshunds!

I know at least one location has banned boxers. Best thing to do is get a small dog, perhaps a rescue (I'm very much AGAINST amateur backyard breeders).  And cross your finger he doesn't get Japan (long process to get pets in, expensive, and most of th4 base housing doesn't allow pets).

Why not wait a bit until you know where you will be?  Not like the world is going to run out of dogs to love.

Thanks for the info! I do want to rescue. I am a HUGE animal lover. And so is my sailor. He really wants an american bulldog or great pyrenees. So we may have to go to a breeder but Im looking for rescues. If we go with a breeder Im going to the best one I can find. Because some breeders are not bad. I have to get a puppy because the dog I have now will probably have trouble getting along with another dog so I would like to get it when its young so she can tell it whose boss at an early age. Haha. Its just a possibility that I will get the dog before we get married. If I find one I have to get it. Thats why I wanted to make sure what breeds were allowed. Im guessing American Bulldogs wont be allowed because people mistake them for pits all the time. Personally I think its ridiculous that they have breed restrictions. Pits use to be military dogs. But thanks again for all the information!
Oh and anybody know if they have rules about birds or small caged animals? I have a macaw, rats, and a hamster. (I know I have tons of animals) Are cats okay too? I have 1 cat. Haha.

There may be a limit on the number of animals.  I know caged reptiles might be prohibited, but don't quote me on that one. There is a reason we always chose NOT to live in military housing, we preferred the freedom of a civilian rental, and our BAH was entirely adequate.

That, and I was raised in Navy housing.

My boyfriend really want to live on base. I might not have my rats for very much longer. They are pretty old. So they might not be a problem. And I will probably end up giving my hamster to my little brother. The bird is a life long commitment though. Hes only 1 so I have about 80 years left with him. I really hope its not a problem. He is very attached to me and I dont think I could give him up.
He may need a foster family if you get overseas orders.

Pets are so difficult, as a kid, we had to adopt out pets more than once. However, when I came back from Japan, I brought back a dog and three cats.

He does know that "on base" housing is not actually on the base?
I dont know. He just always says on base. Ha. He knows more about it then I do though so probably.
He's a single sailor, he might not. Well, it isn't all bad. I just hated having the gossipy Navy wives next door, that, and I didn't like our choices in Japan and SD.
Well I really hope he doesnt get sent to Japan. The dog I have now is like my child. We are hardly ever apart. She even goes to work with me. Im a dog groomer she can come with me.  I would be beyond devastated if I had to leave her behind and so would he. Im sure if they have a problem with our pets he will change his mind about living in their housing because he loves them just as much as I do and he knows how hard it would be for me to have to give any of them up.

Every area is different, this one is for one of the housing areas in GL, even Huskies are banned.

Watch the housing wording for pet policy as this says..."any of the breed lineages"  I know people who had a mixed breed dog but it looked like the one that was banned by housing and they where told to either get rid of the dog or get kicked out of housing.

Animals prohibited by state and/or Federal laws are not permitted. Pets are permitted subject to registration and an annual update.
