How far off base can they travel before they have to take leave. I wanted to plan a weekend at a halfway point about 5 hours from base. would he be aloud to do this?

it honestly depends on the base/command. when my husband was in A school it was I believe 300 miles, but at his command if he leaves the island he has to take leave which is only maybe 50 miles max

Okay, this is a little confusing... if a sailor takes leave, they can travel as far as they like.  They have to ask for that in writing and get it approved.

If you're talking about liberty, normal time off, such as a weekend, then each base sets its own liberty limits.  For Great Lakes it is 300 miles, not one mile more.  That's pretty standard for a training command.  If he's in the fleet, there's still a recall limit, but it usually isn't a huge issue (lot of variation!).  Is he in A school?  If so, and your plans are further away than 300 miles, he can put in a chit asking for an exception to the liberty limits.  It is called an "out of bounds" chit.

If he just goes and doesn't say anything, well, don't post about it here.  Silence is golden, ya know?

And be sure it isn't a duty weekend!  He can't go if he has duty.

no he is not in A school. and he doesnt have duty this weekend either. He is in norfolk. and i was just wanting to meet him for the weekend which is his normal time off. I am new to all this and do not know all the terms yet. thank you for explaining.  He just got his leave and it isnt until the end of June. I am in TN and i miss him a lot. thought I could plan a special weekend if he could get away without breaking rules.

If he doesn't have leave, nor the proper paper work he can't go past the 300 mile mark..if he does and something happens or he is late getting back to work he will be a lot of trouble...like going to CO's mast getting on restriction, loose pay, kind of trouble.

Okay, then liberty.  He needs to know how far away, and then ask his chief.  He will let him know if it is within recall limits or not.

Thank you so very much for all the info. It has been very helpul. I am thinking maybe I should just go all the way up to VA to visit him.
