OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE as of 11/10/2022 PIR vaccination is no longer required.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

San Diego Help!
Hi everyone,
My S.O finally got his orders and he'll be stationed in San Diego....we were really hoping for something on the east coast to stay closer to our families...but what can ya do? He's leaning towards living off base instead of on base (he's stationed at the medical center). Does anyone have recommendations on apartments or neighborhoods we should look at?

Hey!! There Are some Military communities outside of the base. Lincoln Military Housing. Check them out!!! The are Beautiful!!! We live in Point Loma area and it takes 10-15 minutes to get to Balboa Medical Center. If that's where his PCS is this would be a nice location but there are plenty others. We've been here a year and we Love it!!!

Balboa? You'll have a commute no matter where you choose. Much of the "on base" housing is not on base at all. Rent is pretty steep in San Diego, and every landlord knows how much BAH is available, so don't expect to pocket very much. If you have pets, things get expensive and complicated quickly. One last thought, if he's thinking he doesn't want Navy neighbors, well, anywhere affordable and nice is going to be stuffed with Navy families.
San Diego is made up of a lot of diverse neighborhoods. Beach or downtown is nice apartment dwelling, but expensive and full of tourists. National City and parts of Chula Vista can be sketchy. Inland (El Cajon) is hot. We were tucked away between Serra Mesa and Linda Vista. Not bad, but also not great. My friends who are there now liked being near La Jolla and USD, but just bought a house out in Poway.

Thanks Anti M! Yes, hes stationed at Balboa. He's wants to not live on base/in military housing because he wants me to come with him (we're from NY) and we're not married yet. I just want to make sure we/he doesn't end up living in a not-so-good area. He'd like to stay as close to the hospital as possible! But thank you very much, the information you gave helps!

Is he enlisted or an officer? If enlisted, is he senior enough to get BAH? The Balboa area is on the high rent end of the spectrum, although quite nice if you can find something. Look at Mission Valley, OB, and perhaps up the mesas (Linda Vista northward).

He's an officer, so his BAH is pretty decent from what i've looked at so far. But thanks, I'll look into it!

He'll be okay then. Enlisted living off base out of pocket is scary. Look over the neighborhoods, then start asking about specific ones.
edit: I have lived in SD three times, in Coronado when I was very little in the 60s, when I was a sailor in the 80s in the barracks, and as a dependent spouse in the 90s. It is a wonderful town, so much to do, and a very rich history. I LOVE Old Town, but would not live there (the airport is downtown and the planes go over). Gaslamp District is interesting.
