Hi everybody! I'm new to all of this and I have a lot of questions. My boyfriend of over a year has been at boot camp for a week and I miss him like crazy. He is a Nuke, although I don't know specifically if he's going to be an electrition's mate, mechanics mate, etc (I think those are the right names) haha. If anybody could answer some or all of these questions I would greatly appreciate it!

Will he have to wait before starting A school to be put in classes? How long does that usually take?
Assuming he doesn't flunk/get kicked out for some reason, is it for sure that he will do A school, power school, and prototype school? Does it ever happen that they skip some schooling or are deployed or anything unexpectedly?

If he volunteers to be on a sub, is it likely that he will be?

Could he potentially be sent overseas?

We were thinking about getting married after power school but before prototype school. Does that sound doable?

Thanks!

The wait before school is minimal for nukes.  Relatively speaking.   He will go through all three schools, unless he flunks out or is dropped.  A nuke simply cannot do their job safely without completing each section.  Same if he goes subs, he will not be deployed until he successfully graduates.  Takes right around two years.

A nuke can go overseas, although for subs, only to  Hawaii and Guam (last I knew).  Some subs visit foreign ports while deployed, some do not.   A nuke on a carrier may be stationed overseas, anywhere we have such vessels.

Getting married between power school and prototype is entirely doable.  However, you may find the Navy won't move you.  Although the nuke community has ways....

Thank you so much!

The three rates are Machinist Mate (MM), Electricians Mate (EM), and Electronics Technician (ET). He'll find out which rate he'll be about Week 5 of boot camp.

Yes, he'll have to wait for A school. Sometimes it's only two weeks, sometimes it's 2 months, but he will have a little bit of a wait. He'll have plenty of briefs to attend during that time and once those are done, he'll just do a little bit of cleaning or busy work for a few hours each day. Pretty easy days during that phase (it's called Indoc).

Yes, assuming he doesn't fail out or get kicked out, he will go through A school (3 months for MMs, 6 months for EMs and ETs), Power School (6 months for everyone), and Prototype (6 months for everyone). Plus, he'll have some extra tim ein between schools waiting to class up for the next one. Sometimes these holds can be extremely long, but they'll eventually get him through.

I've never heard of someone skipping a school, however, I have heard of instances where the hold times was ridiculously long between Power and Prototype so they would send some guys down to Georgia to spend some time on a submarine working on their submariner qualifications before they were brought back to Prototype. But in general, he'll spend about 2 years getting through the school pipeline (my husband hit his 2 year mark when he was on his first deployment).

If he volunteers subs, it's pretty likely that he'll be put on one, however, it has happened before that a sub vol is sent to an aircraft carrier because that's where they're needed. It's not something that happens a lot, but it does happen.

If by "overseas" you mean Afghanistan or steps foot into some other war zone, chances are prettttty close to zero. However, there are submarines homeported in Guam, and there is one aircraft carrier stationed in Japan. So there is a chance that he'd be stationed overseas. It's not a huge possibility, but if he is single when orders come out (aka not married during Prototype) the chance is higher than if you all were married (they prefer to send single guys overseas because then they don't have to pay to move their family).

And yes, getting married after Power School but before Prototype is totally doable. He'll know his graduation date for Power School when he starts Power School, so you'd have about a six months heads up on when he *could* be home for it. Most of the time they can get leave the two weeks immediately after Power School, but I've heard where they make the guys wait to take it later (or they choose to take it later). It's kind of a chance game, but as far as taking a chance with leave, that's probably one of the better ones to take.

Thanks for all the info! I really appreciate it

Hi! Ya, this site has been amazingly helpful. I'd probably be freaking out without it. I can't wait to get letters! How often have you gotten them? Have you gotten any phone calls?

Nicole and Jessie, I feel like I'm reading my own writing! My fiance is about a week away from PIR from boot camp and he is also a nuke. I got 3 phone calls and it was amazing, it's been a month since the last one though, (but who's counting, right?) and there's been a regular schedule for letters, except this last week for some reason. Keep your chin up!

Jessie, we're also planning on getting married in between prototype and power school, though he did tell me he gets some time off for Christmas :)

Mine is graduating on the 19th as well! I can't wait! I'm jealous of your 4th of July phone call! You didn't get a letter either? Yes nuke is nuclear engineer, sorry! I had a friend who was a corpsman, he seems to really like it, and one of his schools was in San Antonio, which is close to where I am, so that was pretty cool. What ship/division is your SR in?

Oh that sucks you can't make it! I finally got a letter, he couldn't write last week because he was in med. His legs are messed up, but I think he'll still get to graduate. Mine is Ship 12 Div 268, he was a section leader but I'm not sure if he is anymore. After PIR, he'll be headed to SC for A school. Luckily you can watch the live stream of PIR, I know it's not the same but it's better than nothing!

Hey my husband left on July 1st for boot camp. Is that when your boyfriend left? My husband is also a nuke!

Hi! Ya my boyfriend left the 1st and got there the 2nd. Cool! How are you doing? Have you gotten his box yet?

My husband is going to be an MM so he willstart A school right away aafter boot camp
