OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Thanksgiving in A-School
So my SR will have been at A-school in Virginia for 3 weeks by the time Thanksgiving comes around. I know he can't come home but can I go stay with him over the 4 days (Thurs-Sun) they would have off. I'm just wanting to know if it would be worth buying a refundable ticket now before the prices go way up or if there is no way at all he would have any liberty even though it is a holiday?

If he does not have duty he will just have a long weekend, so the Thurs & Fri he will get the same liberty he has on a normal Sat & Sun (as well as that Sat & Sun of course). At 3 weeks in to A school he most likely will not have overnight liberty but can spend the day with you. May or may not need a liberty buddy as well, and that might have to be one of his friends from school. Of course each A school is different. What is his rate & where is he going to A school?

So for overnight liberty, which is phase 3, usually takes about 4 weeks. So he will have time off for thanksgiving but won't be able to stay off base with you. He will have to return to base every night by a certain time, much like PIR weekend.
FYI, his rate is his job. So his rate is IS, not E3. -

I'm okay if he can't stay off base. Would he have to have a liberty buddy or can he just go with me?
Glad that rate thing got cleared up I have been wondering for a long time. Does rate have an affect on a lot of things?

He can put in a request to have you as a liberty buddy. If he's doing everything right, it may well be approved. Even if he has duty, that is only one day out of four. If he has watch at the right time, he could bring you on base for a meal together, perhaps.
Their rating determines what job they are qualified to do, so it determines what type of duty stations and commands they are sent to. Paygrade determines level of responsibility and whether they can live offbase or take dependents overseas. Rate is actually both rating and paygrade combined, just a very small detail.

Correct me if I am wrong but since he is reserves he already has his duty station and command here at home? So once he completes A and C school he just comes right back home? I'm so new to ALL of this. I had know idea what we were getting into when we started this whole thing.

Pretty much straight home. I know he can be called up and deployed, but I don't know how likely that is, or if it would be individually or as a unit.

I'm really not sure about needing a liberty buddy, I'm hoping that maybe someone with experience in that A school can answer that one for you!
Their rate doesn't determine too many of their policies & procedures, so to speak. The ship they are assigned to will determine those things. When he's out of A school you'll get asked "what's his ship?" Instead of "what's his rate?". It matters now because his rate will determine which command he is stationed at, and each command has some different rules and standards. -
