Hey ladies!

My sailor just recently graduated boot camp and now he's in sub school in Groton, CT. H wants me to come visit some time in July. I'm looking for something kind of different for us to do while he has liberty. Something athletic/adventurous. I have no idea about the area so any ideas/help would be great!

Thanks so much!

We went to Devil's Hopyard Statepark and walked around when my husband was stationed there for a few months.  It was pretty and a little bit challenging.  There's a few trails and I believe there's a few other places to hike near Groton too!
I'm going up there July 7 to visit my husband and to go to his BESS graduation on July 15.
thanks!
Hey my boy friend is on that base as well. I have been there a few times and I am going there in july as well. The last time I sis there we did a few diffrent things, if you have a car avaliable your all set. About ten mind from base there is a state park that is called bluff something there is 400 acres to hike on was well as a great view of the ocean. There is an aquarium. In mystic that is close by as well as a bunch of shops there. I had a great deal of fun when I was there. I hope you enjoy you trip but I am sure u guy will

Thanks! That sounds perfect. I live in MS so driving is def out of the question. Hopefully we'll be able to find someone on base to share a car with us for the short time I'm there. Flying is so expensive! I might just have to wait until his graduation to go visit. Is your boyfriend in BESS?

My boyfriend is in A school right now. And yea ms is a bit far to drive thankfully I live in ny. So not as far to travel. If there isn't a person with a car there are shuttles but I am not sure how the shuttle works. Its a lot of fun to visit tho. Plain tickets are a pain I hope you get to see him soon. Idk how much is but Ik its so worth the trip! I took a train last time it was an all day thing but worth it

I considered taking the train, but its like a 30 hour trip. Insane! Considering its only like $100 more to fly, I think saving the time would be worth it. I'll definatly be coming for his graduation, hopefully once in between then, too. Thank you so much for your help! I told him about the parks near by and he's excited.

:)

Good I am glad we spent a whole afternoon. There last time. The view was gorgeous. I hope you get to see him.soon. and if u both chip in for tickets it wont cost as much. That is far to long of a train ride.. mine was only an 8 hour.train ride your welcome and if u need anything.else.just.let me.know
From what I hear Bluff Point is beautiful I haven't been there yet.  If you google hiking trails in CT you can find a bunch of them around the area.  I think the shuttle is for the guys only but from what I understand it is to the mall and back.  You could always rent a car but if you don't there are taxi's all over the area.

of course, I chose a weekend a hurricane came through! nonsense, but seeing my sailor was perfect!

future advise for people traveling to Groton, do NOT fly into hartford (bradley international airport-BDL). travel from there to the base is about 1 hr 30 min and unless you rent a car, it is a total nightmare! the bus and train schedules take you 1 hour out of the way to New Haven for a layover, then continue onto New London, ultimately wasting about 2+ hours of travel time.

Providence, RI airport is so much closer! only about 45 minutes away, with bus and train traveling directly from PVD to New London. hope this helps future travelers! the area is to DIE for. so beautiful, must check out Avery Point around sunset! :)
